Tweeters by mirror controls?
Tuesday, May 10, 2005 8:54 PM
I'm thinking about getting a component set up front and if I'm going to do that, obviously I will have to figure out where to put the tweeters. In a long rush-hour traffic-jam I was thinking of locations when I got the idea to put them on the top front of the door, right under the triangle where the side mirror controls are (2000 cavalier). I think this space should be more than large enough to fit a .75 inch tweeter. Wires can be concealed and run under the triangular cover, through the door panel to the bottom. Also thinking about putting crossovers in the side pockets of the doors. Not much other use for them...

Any thoughts? Probably looking at a Infinity Reference 6000CS or 6010CS set. I have the Reference 6002I up front right now (just put them in) and they sound pretty good, especially compared to the Sony speakers I had in there before.

That could work, definately wouldn't get obstructed

That is where I was going to mount mine, but on my driver's side I have a latch to adjust my window, so that idea went out the window. I ended up mounting them near there, right under the A-Pillar. I think either place will be good. Mine sound great where they are.

Actually, i'm not sure how you are mounting them(surface or if you can aim them), but if you are surface mounting you might want to mount them when I have them. They seemed to be aimed better in that location. Good luck.

problem with either locations is your going to get a heavy left side bias since your so close to the tweeters, i'd try and mount them down in the doors close to your mids, since this will also help with any seperation issues.

if u really want to try it up high, get some double sided tape and tape them in and try them in several diffrent positions to see where they sound best to you.

I'll have to take that into consideration. I will make sure to try out a few locations with 2-sided tape or something before committing a location.

Deicded to order the speakers now ( 6000CS ) because everyone seems to be dumping them now that the 6010CS are out. Got them for $96 + S&H! Probably going to get the amplifier some time in the next 2 or 3 weeks (also going on a big vacation at the begining of June so I might wait to make sure I don't spend all of my money!).

Velcro works to and lets you move the tweeters easier when trying different locations.

I have mine mounted in the kick panels on the corner of the trim piece. My mids are in the door (until I get around to building custom kick panels). I tried different locations and found I got the best imaging hear. Right to left is equal since the right side is only about 8" further from your ear than the left. And it actually lifted the soundstage up to the top of the dash.

I tested my setup with a USACi test disk and everything was where it was supposed to be.

What I did to lessen this is just adjusted the balance through my headunit. It seemed to work fine for me. The tape or velco idea is good also. Good luck

I have always been told by everyone that knows what they are doing you wnt the tweeter as close to the mids as possile, like the kicker component speakers wher eyou can actually mount the tweeter in th emiddle of the woofer, coaxles are surpossed to have better sound quality from having the music come form one place and components have alot more power handling, compnents with the mid mounted tweeter is the wasy to go but for your situation just go as close a convient

only bad thing about that tom is its going to destroy the image for anyone else in the car as well. wich may not be an issue if your the only one in the car.

Aight, maybe I am missing something, but I have seen a few people who have done this or something similiar and placed the tweeter on the door panel. Now, compared to my setup, the tweeter in this picture is actually closer to the driver's ear So this setup seems to be even more bias than my setup? The goal is to try and get the distance to each tweeter as close as possible, which is why placing them in kickpanels at you feet is the ideal choice. If I am wrong then will someone please correct me. Thanks.

yea...the reason you would want to place them in the kicks...is because the farther away the speakers are from you...the less that the distance will be noticable. so if you have them down in the kicks, then if their is a difference between the distance, you won't be able to tell.

wysiwyg: Yea, but what I was trying to figure out is icompared to darkstars location on the door and mine up under the a pillar, mine are further from the my ear, so would under the a pillar be a better location than on the door? Why or why not?

tom i'd actuallly have to go out to my car and measure the distances, darkstars tweeters do look a few inches closer to the driver then the mirror locations, but you also have to take into acount that his locations is also about 12" lower then the a-pillar. that 12" is probalby enough to get the pathlengths closer the the mirror locations.

the measured distance would be from the listeners ears to the tweeter. your head is allot higher so the distance down to the one in the door will have more to travel then from your ear to the mirror location, someone can run out and measure this for me if they are feeling energetic, cause im at work and the cars home, but i'm pretty sure the door location is going to be further.

weather the door location is closer or farther matters less than the fact that the tweeter is closer to where the majority of the music is coming from, thus allowing your sounds to seem more natural. If you seperate them to far your going to have 1 string from the guitar in your back seat (Sub), 2 strings from the same guitar coming from the door up front, and 2 strings coming from infront of you....Hope that makes some sence...I'd suggest as low as possible for both components and as close to gether as possible too....I have Kicks with the 6.5" and the tweeter right next to eachother by my feet. Does well for keeping the distances from right and left as close as possible and keeping the Image together.

Aight, thanks a lot guys. I am still quite new to this car audio stuff, so I like hearing different points and learning. The distance between the door and under the A-Pillar is probably relativly close. I have not heard my tweeters when they are in different locations, so maybe if I get motivated sometime I will. I would like to get some kicks, but probably after I get some subs. Without hearing other locations, I like where my tweeters are. It sounds as if whoever is singing is directly in front of me. I guess it works for now until I get kicks.

just remember tom if the singer is directly in front of you. to your passenger the singer is all the way on the left wich may not concern you.

the only problem i see with mounting them in the doors is that when people are in the car their bodies cover the speakers and it pisses me off. it really takes away from the tweets. any comment welcome or suggestions

ummm.... in my moms avalanche the tweeters are in the a pillars aimed at the same point in the middle of the windshield..... you cant even tell where in front of you the sound is comming from.

i would never base a good sounding system off of a stock car system.

that would be like saying you can't make a car faster then it came from the factory.

nate. feed them more power and the leg blockage will become less of an issue, the down side to lower mounted speakers, is that your going to have to feed them more power.

Just mount the mid and tweet in the center of the dash in a pod

not true.... the sound stage was designed by bose... I read a long thing on soundstage imageing a while back, but i dont remember where, but when the tweeters are fired from the sides to a common point on the windshield, it makes an illusion of the sound comming from an indeterminable point outside the car... makes for a highly realistic sound stage. if i knew the article still it goes more indepth
