Got a problem, have a 2002 2200 4 speed auto. Just recently the car shifts really hard into drive or reverse. It also won't shift out of first gear which is the main problem. I don't think its the air sensor because that usually just causes the hard shift into drive or reverse.
the tranny is in failsafe. when the car enters failsafe, the line pressure goes to max (thats your hard engaugment) and its leaves it in one gear (whatever gear has both shift solonoids turned off, likley 2nd gear). the computer is either commanding this, or you have a wiring issue and have lost the 12 volts to the tranny.
either way the check engine light should be on and it will have codes in the pcm. you need to get it scanned.
I though the J bodies had a Hydrolic Transmission?

actualy, they did use the 3t40 (th125) from 1980 untill 2002. 95+ only the 2.2l cars got them, and they died when gm killed off the 2.2l.

I have a 2002 with a 2200 engine with a 4t40e trany.
dan
i know that. i never said the 2.2 exclusivly got the 3t40. the 2.2/2200 could have either a 3t40 or the 4t40e. typicaly, base model cavaliers got the 3t40, base sunfires got the 4t40e, but i have seen plenty of the oposite.
hey thanks for the help. i guess ill have to get these codes read. trac and engine light have been on for a while since im turbo.
