Z24 tranny/clutch prob, please help

Hello. I have a 2001 Z24 with a 5-speed, it has 96000kms. The car was making a weird clicking noise which was coming from the driver's side of the car. I brought it to my buddy who is a mechanic and he thought it was coming from a cv-joint, so he and I replaced both axles and both wheel hub/bearings. I drove the car around the block listening for any noises and although the noise was not as prominent it was still there. I turned onto a side street shifting from third to second gear and the rpm's shot right up as if it was in neutral. As the car came to a stop I was able to put the car in all five gears and reverse and the car did nothing. The clutch had no burning smell as if it was slipping previously and we verified that all linkages were moving properly. The clutch pedal pressure has always felt weak but the clutch has never slipped before. I am stumped on this problem and was hoping to get some advice before I drop the tranny and replace the clutch just to find out the tranny is the problem. Is this a common occurrence with these cars? What would you suggest I do next? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
