well...what I did, was disconnect the battery, wait about 10 minutes, tap the brakes to drain any power retained by various system capacitors (probably not needed) and removed it. airbags aren't as big of a deal as they are made out to be

i always pull the air bag fuse as well before i start, and i always end up not sitting in front of the airbag, probalby not needed but i figure if for some fluke reason it went off i wouldnt be in front of it. once its off careful because you have to most likely cut the horn wire and then unplug the yellow air bag wire. just lift up the tap on to and then pull the wire out of the hole

GM's procedure is as follows:

(I have always used this)

DISARM: (obviously with key off)
1. Disconnect negative battery cable

2. Remove the Airbag Fuse

3. Disconnect the SIR harness from both airbags (If you have 2) including the CPA (Connector Position Assuance clip)

4. Remove Airbag

5. After replacing the negative battery cable, Put key in ignition and turn it to the run position - the air bag light SHOULD BE ON! this is normal and does not mean the system is malfunctioning.

REARM:

1. Disconnect the Negative battery cable

2. Install Airbag

3. Connect the SIR wiring harness and make certain that you REINSTALL THE CPA's !!! This is very important!

4. Reinstall the Airbag Fuse

5. Reconnect the negative battery cable.

I forgot

6. Turn the ignition switch to on and the air bag light should flash a few times and turn off. If it stays on the airbag system is not working and you need to check to make sure everything is connected properly, if so it will need to be repaired.

Once you take off the top dash piece the airbag cover just unscrews. I believe there are 10-12 7mm screws holding it on.
