it all really depends on how you go about doing it. a J body can lay frame on the ground without messing anything up, IF done rite. how low are you looking to go where you think you'll mess something up?
ill give you the basics. when you lower a car, you need to do it rite. take your time with it, and most importantly DONT CHEAP OUT. if you do cheap out you run a serious risk of not only hurting your car, but yourself and possibly others as well. $50 ebay coilovers are indeed too good to be true, as are the cheap ass struts. it takes a lot of work to get them to operate, and they still dont do it properly and safely.
on to some basic details for springs and coilovers(air isnt my knowlege, lol): basically, no matter how low youre looking to go, you will need to replace the struts too, because the stock struts are only meant for stock spring rates, and WILL blow out after a short period of time(say a few months depending on how low you go). not too mention, riding around lowered on stock struts is bouncy as hell... it makes for an awkward driving experience on bad roads. (i know, im lowered on stock struts, and not really enjoying waiting to get my new, good struts). overall its just easier if you have the money to do it all at once. this may sound hypocritical because of the way i myself am doing it, but trust me, im regreting not buying struts when i got my springs... and now because of money issues i need to wait... anyway, basically theres that, and the fact that you WILL need a wheel alignment when youre done. unless youre REALLY good, lol. so figure spending upwards of $800 to do this rite the first time.

try reading up on this (clicky) and especially read this **(clicky)** and you'll find almost everything you need to know about lowering, and how low you really can go.

most of all, good luck
