Well, I've gotton to the point where I need a new car. I just need something different from my crapalier. I've been looking around for a used GTP... I want a red 2 door with black leather and fully loaded.
Just looking for some input on them. Things to look for and whatnot

alot of the guys here in phx have some fast 1's
and they are nice , and have alot of support for parts and pcm programing
I know I love mine if that helps.
You can't even begin to believe how much nicer of a car it is over a J until you drive one. I liked every J I owned (I owned 3), but I will never own another one, that stage of my life is far over.
I say go for a 4 door, as much as you might want a 2 door, think of it this way. I was paying $3000 a year to insure a 99 z24. I now pay $1200 a year to insure my GTP and my z71.
4 doors is also nice in a lot of other ways too, and trust me, once you turn on the performance shift and step down on the gas the first time, you won't care how many doors you have

My buddy is selling one, Mint, Red 2 door, leather, HUD and everything else for 3800 bucks...
i was just talking to him about it last night
i used to have a 00 GTP i had the smaller pulley for the s/c and a c.a.i., magna flow catback, and also had a 75shot zex nitrous kit on the car.. i loved it and i beat the hell out if and it never failed me. just had to but lots of tires and gas.
i had close to 100k on the odometer and decided to sell it before it started to cost me alot in repairs... the guy i sold it to said he has not put a dime into the car since i sold itto him and he has about 140k on it now.. sorta makes me wish i never sold it.
what are your plans for your cavi?
laters

My car was made with wrenches, Not chopsticks.

Tell him I'm very very interested if he really is selling it
As far as 2 door vs 4 door, it really doesnt matter to me, i would take either really. As far as the cavalier goes, its not being sold, but im dropping the insurance on it and parking it for a few years. I want a nice, all year round car I can have alot of fun with, and I've always wanted a GTP.
ah, a GTP thread, how can i keep out of this?
what year are you looking for? you get a few choices with each different year '97 GTP's do not have traction controll, '98 and up do. '97-'00 (i think, may be '99) have performance shift. this just ups the shift poinst a little and firms up the shifts. not a crazy mesurable difference in the quarter... but it definetly makes the car more fun when you can chirp 2nd in an auto at 45mph. make sure to get the HUD. it's wonderful.
couple things to watch out for;
rust (of course) usually behind the fenderwells. either front or rear tires.
valve cover leaks. they're normal cars with normal problems, but valve covers leak. and it sucks
if you can, pull off the supercharger belt (it's a seperate belt from the accesorie belt) and spin the supercharger by hand. make sure it spins freely. then wiggle the pulley side to side. see if it has any play. if it does, it's ok, but the supercharger coupler is probably a little worn. $30 and an hour later you're all better.
open the hood up after you get done runnin the crap out of it and sniff. not only for the coolant as above, but sniff for gas, too. especially around the injectors and quick disconnect on the fuel rail (it's under the engine cover, i'd take that off and give everything a once over, too)
if it's got performance shift, drive it around and tap that on and off. do a couple little runs with it on and off. make sure there's a difference. the regulators in the trannies goes out in these a lot. if it's out, tell them you want it fixed before you buy it. the part's somewhat expensive, and labor is around $700.
that's all the stuff i can think of off the top of my head. i'll keep diggin.
all in all, i love my '97 GTP. i got a coup, i think they look better. entry to the back seat is fine, who needs back doors? and the space in the back seat? whoa! makes me laugh at the mustangs i beat. im faster, and i can fit 5 comfortably! as for longetivity, it's not uncommon to see 3800's in the upper 100K miles. mine's got 110K and im just now getting around to doing engine mods on it. and, if you're gonna go more towards the visual side of it...dont worry about the lack of 5x115 rim choices.... im gonna let you in on a little secret. the 5x4.5 rims such as mustang rims fit them too
damn that's a long post for me
Andy

it's not how fast you go, it's how you get there that counts.
