contrary to what some people might try to make you believe...bmw's can be quite reliable...keep in mind however that repair prices especially if you do not do them yourself will be very high...as far as the e34 540i's they do have one specific problem to watch out for. They originally came with an alloy block that bmw called "nikasil" the high sulphur content of US gasoline caused corrosion in the cylinder walls leading to a loss in compression and therefore a rough idle, loss in power, oil burning etc. BMW did engine replacements for free for many cars and replaced them with a new "alusil" block but i do not currently know if they are still doing them. However a few orignial nikasil blocks still exist in good condition and it is said that with less sulphur in todays gas they shouldnt have a problem in the future. so basically i think that is an average price for that car...if you like 6 speeds check it out...they only existed in 95 on the 540i's...I have had nothing but luck with my e34 540i although i have put a lot into it...when it was stock it was still suprisinly quick and handled really well especially for a bigger sedan. one thing to check out...for about 4 thousand more you can get an e39 540i(they started in 97)

^ i thought you'd have some good input about this...
but, the car is a 98, so it is an E39. is it coming up the same for you?
oh yeah...lol i looked so quick i though it was an e34..so pretty much disregard everything i just said...so yeah i think that is a pretty good price...check out ebay and most of them are going for 3 or 4 thousand more than that...no need to worry about nikasil and alusil...6 speeds were available on all years of that generation...i would check one out but the auto's are still quite nice and pretty quick...I personally love the e39 five series..its my favorite generation really...i would check it out and if you are ready for the maintenance costs go for it...

100,000 miles humm...wll my neighbor sold his for 10,000 and it was in perfect shape but it was like a 1997 or something....so it could be a good deal as long as it checks out ok. but also think about the resale value, when you decided to sell it (if you do) you will never get that much for it considering it will have alot more mliles on it.
Eh, I was just wondering if anyone else thought that price was kinda low. It's a nice car, but not really what I'm looking for. If I'm selling my bike and car for a new car, it's going to be one that I really REALLY want (for about $15,000), like an E36 M3.
