Get a V6, do not even bother with the 4 banger ones...my dad had 3 toyota trucks from the 80s. He used them as work trucks and ran them into the ground, they ran like champs.

eh, if you do get the 4 banger, make sure it's the 22RE, not the 20R. the only big problem with the 22RE is the plastic shims they use for the timing chain. left alone for long enough, and the timing chain will beat a hole into the block, most probably into a water journal. (happened to me in my 85 Celica GTS).
the 22RE is a pretty rock solid motor though. lots of low end, and taken care of, will last forever.

my buddy had one of those things with well over 200k on it.... it was a TANK!... other than the timing chain guides, body rust is really the only other problem I can think of to look out for. If i needed a small pickup the old yota would be up there on the list.

These trucks are sweet. Here's mine:

And on these trucks, the 22RE is just about as fast as the 3.0 (3.slow) V6, and probably more dependable. For tons of great info, check out http://www.yotatech.com. I'm rdlsz24 on there.

If you want to hardcore 4 wheel you want a straight axle 79-85. 85 is supposed to be the year to have because the last year of the straight axle, 1st year for efi(22re) option, I also think it's the first year for the extended cab. Which is the exact truck that I have. It has been in the family since it was new and has only had regular maint.

The best one to have have would be a turbo 4x4, which is pretty rare because they only made them a couple of years like 85-87? The early year 3.0 v6's were junk and had a lot of problems. The only real problem with the trucks is rust; the bed will rust away to nothing and the frame will rust by the rear leaf springs. The bodies on the 4 runners don't rust as bad because the 1/4 panels are 1 piece unlike the trucks which the bed is 2 pieces and has weatherstripping between the 2 pieces and thats where the rust starts.

yeah, it's a hard find, but I've heard good things about the 22RTE. right before I got rid of my Celica I tried to find one. I know they put them in the Forerunners, and Eric (97cavieLS) told me they also put them in the trucks.
personally, I'd still like to get another GTS and get the Weber side draft setup for it.
for a little info, there was a change between the 84 to 85 22RE's IIRC. I think they changed the block height which resulted in a change to the head. I'm pretty sure that the RE and RTE head is different, but I'm unsure if the RTE head will fit on the 84 and prior blocks. and to help find motors, the 85 Celica GTS was the last year the Celica cars got the 22RE. (was also the last year of the RWD IRS setup)

when i had my 2001 sunfire i was stoped at a light and that same truck slid into from the back. his was a 4x4 and a wooden bed on the back . broke part of his gril and bent the bumper a little. my car got a crack near the back plate and a whole where the S is for where it says sunfire on my bumper so for about a week it looked like i was driveing a Unfire.
