Toyota, Honda report sales jump in July

DETROIT - Amid steep gas prices, Toyota Motor Corp. rode its reputation for fuel-efficient cars to a double-digit sales increase in July and outsold Ford in the U.S. for the first month ever. Honda Motor Co. also reported robust sales.
U.S. automakers experienced a moribund July as sales plummeted from a year ago, when heavy discounts spurred a near record month for the auto industry.
For General Motors Corp., Ford Motor Co. and DaimlerChrysler AG's Chrysler Group, the steepest declines were in trucks and sport utility vehicles, the high-margin items on which the three companies are heavily dependent. Both Honda and Toyota credited their reputations for fuel efficiency and strength in small cars for boosting them during a period when retail gasoline prices have been near $3 per gallon in most parts of the country.
Overall, 1.49 million vehicles were sold last month, a 17.4 percent decrease from July 2005. The seasonally adjusted sales rate, which shows what total sales would be if they remained at the same rate for the entire year, was 17.24 million, according to Autodata Corp. Automakers sold 17 million vehicles in 2005.
GM, the world's largest automaker, said its sales fell 22.2 percent, with trucks falling 31.2 percent and cars inching down 2.7 percent.
At Ford, sales of Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles fell 35.2 percent. Truck sales tumbled 44.8 percent, while cars slipped 6.7 percent. Sales of F-Series pickup trucks, long the country's best-selling vehicle and the company's most important vehicle, shot down 45.6 percent.
DaimlerChrysler's Chrysler Group said its sales fell 37.4 percent, with truck sales off 40 percent and car sales off 23.5 percent. That change happened even though Chrysler, alone among automakers, has revived the employee price promotion that fueled sales last year.
Chrysler announced Tuesday that it would extend the discount program through August. Company officials said the promotion was helping, though not as much as last year, when all three domestic automakers were doing it and each benefited from the advertising of the others.
Toyota's sales, meanwhile, soared 11.7 percent, with cars jumping 19.8 percent and trucks up 1.3 percent. The company outsold Ford by more than 17,000 vehicles.
David Lucas, vice president of Autodata, said it was the first time Toyota had sold more vehicles than Ford.
"Market conditions are playing to traditional Toyota strengths of fuel efficiency, strong passenger car offerings as well as our comprehensive hybrid lineup," Jim Lentz, executive vice president of Toyota's U.S. division, said in a statement.
Honda said its July sales rose 6 percent, with cars up 5.4 percent and trucks up 6.8 percent. The company said it was unable to keep up with demand for its small cars.
Paul Ballew, GM's executive director of global market and industry analysis, said GM's year-over-year decline was in line with expectations after "inflated" sales in the summer of 2005.
Ford said it was heartened by growing retail demand for its new mid-size sedans, the Ford Fusion, Mercury Milan and Lincoln Zephyr. Retail sales for the vehicles were up 18 percent over June, the company said.
But Ford's lineup of new vehicles is thin this year compared to its competitors. In the fall, it is scheduled to introduce two crossovers, the Ford Edge and the Lincoln MKX. The company hopes the more fuel-efficient SUV alternatives will help it hold on to market share as high gas prices cause consumer tastes to shift.
Nissan Motor Co. said it sold 19.5 percent fewer vehicles. That included a 24.9 percent decrease in trucks and a 14.5 percent decrease in cars. Paul Taylor, chief economist of the National Automobile Dealers Association, attributed Nissan's lagging sales to a lack of fresh products.
For the first seven months of the year, Ford's sales fell 9.7 percent, GM's sales were down 14.1 percent, and Chrysler's sales fell 10.4 percent. Toyota's and Honda's sales rose 10.1 percent and 6.9 percent, respectively, while Nissan's fell 7.9 percent.
GM shares fell 93 cents, or nearly 3 percent, to close at $31.30 on the New York Stock Exchange. Ford shares fell 9 cents to $6.58, while DaimlerChrysler's U.S. shares fell 61 cents to $51.04.

what's wrong with americans today? GM offers more vehicles in their fleet that get 30+ miles per gallon than anybody else! plus fun and sporty!
GM wont lose the number 1 spot with all the new cars there comeing out and there geting more hybrid cars now also. there redoing there whole line up and building cars people want to but and geting more powerfull motors with better gas miles. the new malibu and impala and camaro will do good for chevy. pontiac hit a home run with the G6 hard top and the solstice . and with saturn geting down over and geting better cars like the sky GMs geting there.
GM didnt take a hit like Ford did? how do you figure?
Ford had a worse fall last month, but for the year, they are down 9.7%
as opposed to GM's 14.1%
and with the return of the mid-sized car in Ford's lineup it should help things. It wont stop all the bleeding, but it will help
If you notice, in all three cases with the big three, it was a ridiculous drop in truck/suv sectors, while a minor drop in cars (well except chrysler who had a huge drop in cars as well as trucks)
Guys these drops are comparing from a year ago !!! You know Employee priceing for everyone SALE !!!
That is when GM Sold more cars in 1 month in a long time. Of course there is going to be a drop. Atleast now GM is making a profit on what they sell.

Which product would that be?

The Yaris of course!!
Red 2005 Saturn Ion-3 Coupe
The Honda Fit Kills the Yaris IMO.
Did I just say that?
Buy an Aveo
Ford and Chrysler are already worse off then GM.
The attention has been on GM because they are #1.

Every car compared in the same class as a ford or a chevy. Resale, trade in value, quality of the vehicle built, the vehicles life. Seriously, these are facts nothing new or that I just made up. Look at consumer reports or Kbb. Compare the vehicles. Then go waste your money on another domestic because you know the value of a dollar. Geeze. I didn't think there was anyone that would actually argue with a fact.
Oh, and on a different note, I agree with the Fit > Yaris.
The Yaris, especially the 2 door, looks nasty in my opinion. I saw a Fit in person, and I think it looks a lot better than the Yaris, and I usually don't like hatchbacks.

Wait, lets not forget to mention all of toyotas sport cars....
O wait, thats right they dont have any.
And full size diesel trucks, forget about it.
And for the record consumer reports=garbage.

Consumer reports= garbage??? LOL!! Okay sure buddy. and yes the tundra is a better truck is will last longer than the silverado and sierra. As far as pay load and tow capacity obviously they dont make a desiel so if thats what you are comparing too.....than buy a domestic truck.
Its toyota/ honda/ nissan.....I own a honda aswell so no complains there. So the fit and yaris comparison is great because they will both be great consumer purchases.
Please stick too the facts people....not your opinions on looks or "sports cars" The fact is in 2004 when I sold my cavy it blue booked at like 5,000 bucks. I purchased it brand new for 13,000 2 years before!!! Do you guys not see that when purchasing a domestic you are wasting your hard earned $$$$??? My 1995 Toyota corolla booked for 4,000 dollars and was 7 years older and had 3 TIMES THE MILEAGE!!!! Please.................you get real!!! LOL this is actually humorous
AND as for the toyota sports car........go buy a 60,000 dollar chevy vette and watch the top blow off because chevy makes a better car???? HELLO! Money well wasted.

No, sorry you lose. You said Toyota makes a better product.....period. If they made a better product, they wouldn't have had recall after recall after recall this year. That has nothing to do with resale value. Otherwise restate your sentenance as "Toyota makes better resale value cars.....period."

yeah your right all your forigien cars are much better then out american crap...speaking of waisting things i wish i could have my minute back from reading your ignorant post...if you paid $13,000 then id like to take this moment to laugh at you, and just cause a car blue books higher then another dosnt make it a better car nessicarly, and if your so against american cars why are you here?
American car makers havnt been doing so well for a few years now, this topic has beat to death..but gm is the only one i really see being able to have to power to turn this around
and comon MR.19inchblingers , just say it..dollar for dollar theres prolly no better buy in the exotics world then a z06
The first brand new car I purchased was my 2002 cavy. I modded the heck out of it and it will always be my first love!!

I like seeing all of the modded cavys and how far the whole modding of them has come. This is why I stay here. Now that I have a better financial situation I dont have to settle for cars like my cavalier. The only reason I purchased it was because it was cheaper and GMAC will finance an 18 year old kid.
I came from a "chevy" family but as the years have gone by cheaper parts came in place because of cutting costs to increase profit margins. If GM would stop cutting corners than more Americans would buy them and stop turning to the foreign markets. There is a reason for the way the market is now. People dont just stop buying a certain brand because its the best product out there.
Yes the Z06 is dollar for dollar the most bang for your buck in the exotics world of sports cars. I don't buy sports cars though so that means nothing to me.
IMO the only reason why Toyota isn't #1 yet is because they dont have a BIG truck and the price of the vehicles.
Well enough of the thread jacking lets focus on the topic at hand
Toyota Officially takes #2 spot for now.
actually toyota is designing a new heavy duty diesel truck and a sports car. the sports car, called the toyota volta, is using a 3.3L V6 hybrid that will outperform a corvette and get upwards of 40 mpg
and whoever said something about gm offering a lot of cars in the 30mpg range....well thats not that great these days, 40+mpg is becoming the new standard of good fuel economy
ford and GM are both going down the tubes because they can't seem to design a decent car for the average person. i figured this out when i was shopping for a car last month, and walked away from both ford and gm very dissapointed with the new car selection
what i find funny is how everyone tries to defend the "american" cars that are made in canada and mexico, and try to bash the "imports" that are made in america
did you know that if you live in japan and want a toyota truck, or a camry, they have to import them from america, its where every last one of them are made
