What does it take to be "Car/Truck of the Year"?

It takes the vehicle with the most votes to be the "Car/Truck of the Year". Unless you are asking what does it take to get nominated?

I wasn't sure if this was a contest with rules "Most innovative, etc". Like how C&D named the Civic and Ridgeline their car/truck of the year.

No I don't think that's how it works. From what I remember, is there is a group of I think 50 people (various automotive journalists, etc.) that cast their vote depending upon what they think deserves the award. Then naturally, the car with the most votes gets the award.

it will be honda's or toyota's...no doubt in my mind, thats how the media works

Red 2005 Saturn Ion-3 Coupe
judging by the way that normally goes, the winners are the camry and the tahoe.

It is along those lines that Ronu said.
The judges look for, high engineering, innovation, technology, efficiency, competitiveness in it's class, ingenuity, how will it impact the market, etc.
To be a contender, the car will not limited run, the vehicle has to be available by Jan 1, 2006- Dec 31, 2006. If available after Jan 1, 2007 the car will be considered for the 2008 running. Last but not least, the car has to be new or significantly improved (not just a face lift).

The vehicle must be badged as an import
Currently #4 in Ecotec Forced Induction horsepower ratings. 505.8 WHP 414WTQ!!!
Currently 3rd quickest Ecotec on the .org - 10.949 @ 131.50 MPH!!!
FJ Cruiser?
It's a cool looking SUV thing, and I wouldn't mind having one, but it's not legendary or groundbreaking. I think the Tacoma should be up there, proven reliability, power to back it up, and great styling.
In the truck section...
Chevy Silverado or Tahoe/Surburban are sure winners. High-Tech, Flex-fuel capable, more aerodynamic, more efficient, etc the list goes on.
The car section...
To me it is a toss up with the Infinity G35 and Lexus LS 460.
Why?
Infinity G35 is a bargain and still being high-tech and I would go as far as to say the leader of the segment. 306HP on a 3.5L N/A! Only Lexus IS350 can muster that and Toyota needs Direct Injection to reach it. Here Nissan did it with "older-tech" Port Injection. Hell, BMW needs Twin Turbo AND Direct Injection to achieve 300HP. G35 raised the bar on the entry level luxury car segment.
Impressive for Nissan/Infinity.
Lexus LS460.... Why?
This is the car that once you are on the inside you will say: "we have arrived."
How?
The car is packed with so many gizmos, gizmos that 10-20 years ago were ideas on concept cars found in the Auto-shows. Then the craftsmanship on this car is stupendous!! It could rival a Rolls Royce and all starting at MSRP of $65K. Then the performance... 4.6L V8 @ 380HP. Only high-performance cars can match that. Then there will be a hybrid model that will have the performance of a V-12 with a fuel efficiency of a V8. Last but not least... I will bet it will have Lexus quality.
The Germans will have to play catch-up on this one, because just like the G35, the bar has been raised with the Lexus LS460.
