Next Camaro manufacture info

Well we all know that the next Camaro will be made in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada in late 2008.
Here are some details on this issue...
GM will get 30min more production a week at its 3-shift Oshawa plant in exchange for the chance to build the Camaro which GM and unions says.
This will translate to about 120 vehicles a month.
GM & Lutz expect to sell 100,000 Camaro a year.

CAW hourly employees gave up 2 min of paid break time per 8hr shift, eliminate 200 CAW members in skilled construction trades at the plant. Workers will not be replaced once they retire. Lastly, Cease to represent houscleaning employees. About 500 employees who retire or take a restructuring benefits package will not be replaced. All to win a chance to build this classic.

GM targeted Oshawa'a Line #2 as one of 12 facilities it would close by 2008.
GM mainly wanted Oshawa's plant because of their quality build, which was recognized by JD Power & Associates as having the highest quality in North America and 2nd best in productivity.
UAW was pushing and GM sort of considered at Oklahoma City plant, which has been permanent layoff since Feb/2006. That plant built the GMT360 (Trailblazer EXT Triplets). But finally GM said no and and cease production in that plant was final. Reason? It would be very expensive to convert a truck plant to a car plant.

GM had a lengthy demand, but health care cost were a minor consideration.
GM considered several factors, those included; close work with government on an investment package and the development of a competitive labor agreement with a supportive CAW.

Also very important on this related issue...
The Oshawa plant builds Impala, Monte Carlo on line 1. LaCrosse and Grand-Prix on Line 2. The Silverado/Sierra are built at its truck plant. All cars will be assembled on Line 2 next year.
GM will convert Line 1 to assemble its new RWD Zeta platform (like Camaro) and build a flexible manufacturing system in which GM spent like $740 million. The plant will be ready to build FWD, RWD and AWD on the same line. As of now, GM is focused on Camaro.

I was so happy to hear this I have a number of friends on the Oshawa line. Also that place would have ended up like flint if there was a shut down, Oshawa pretty much revolves entirely around the plant. We heard about this last week and a few of them have pretty much been drunk since to celebrate. As much as the CAW wanted this the employees at the plant wanted it more.

I think these Camaros are going to be of exelent quality, they are looking at this like the Corvette plan workers do. They have the privelidge of making these. 3 of the guys i know have said they wont even go into work high anymore lol, they want to make sure that every camaro looks perfect. I know 3 guys is nothing but if that is the attitude on their line (#1) then this bodes well for the future.

That can only build 350,000 max a year. You do know GM sells 1 million of those trucks a year. So Yes they have more than 1 plant building them. And Oshawa Truck plant is one of them.

That'll last 2 weeks max. As long as there is a Union protecting deadbeat workers, there will be deadbeat workers.
