Okay here's the story I just bought a new car for the winter it a 1993 Toyota Tercel DXL 4 door, 4 cylinder, auto, with 137,000km. Me and my b/f went to go have a look at it last week it was mint inside and out and when we test drove it, it ran really good to, and there appeared to be nothing really wrong with it but also keep in mind neither me or my b/f are mechanics. So anyways today when we went to pick it up my b/f noticed that when I started the car a big puff of blue smoke came out from the exhaust pipe, so then he followed behind me for a while then he told me to pull over, he told me that the whole time since I started the car it was blowing blue smoke. Also when we were parked I revved up the engine and my b/f look to see what was coming out of my exhuast pipe it was a lot of black smoke from carbon build up and a little bit of water from condensation, so we figured that was normal so we started to drive home again with my b/f still following behind me to keep an eye out to see if it would still do that, but sure enough once the engine heated up no more blue smoke. But then once we parked the car for about 40min we decided to start it up again to see what would happen and sure enough blue smoke. Does anyone know what might be causing this?
sounds like a head gasket, blue smoke is usualy a good indication of the head gasket going, letting anti freeze get through... bet if u put ur hand up to the smoke for a moment then smelled it, it would have a sweet smell to it
On the other hand....you have other fingers.

I just bought a 20 inch widescreen ultrasharp flat pannel..I'm going to have to subscribe to the high quality porn places now......damn
^^^ Yup. That's usually the case.

Blue smoke = oil burning.
oil overfill? or is that just white smoke?
yup...oil burning. that's typical of older Toyotas.

I was thinking oil too.

um, no
blue = oil
white = coolant
black = rich
always works that way.
you have oil getting into a cylinder, probably blowing past a ring. maybe a valve seal. either way, you're burning oil.

it's not how fast you go, it's how you get there that counts.

^ ^ ^ He's right on.
If it does it on start up and then goes away, it is most likely the valve seal leaking oil. If it puffs blue all the time then it is probably rings.
my wife 93 tercel pufs at startup and then it goes away as the engine warms up. its been doning it for over a year, don't bother rebuilding. You can get the vale seal replaced if it is consuming a lot of oil, if it's not that bad, don't bother... just keep an eye on the dipstck.

Definitely valve seals, if it goes away when warmed up.. I can't believe people said head gasket?

To add to that, white may also be transmission fluid. My Mustang had a kink in the tranny fluid line, that dripped onto the exhaust and left white smoke. Coming out from under/behind the car.

^ ^ ^ yeah Toyota's will keep going despite problems. I don't know what it is, but they just seem not to die. You can keep diving them with so many broken/warn parts it's not funny.

that's true, tranny fluid does leave white smoke when it burns. but it's a different pattern to the smokey. it'll do it at different times than the engine will. head gasket smoke will go all the time, tranny smoke will usually only occure under load at high MPH... and of course it wont be coming from the tail pipe

Let it be.
My Camaro's valve stem seals were leaking for 2 years and I had no problems.
Just change the oil when you should and you will be fine.
