Ok, my friend picked up a sweet 99 Jeep GC. There is a mild grinding noise coming from the rear end in general. he dropped it off at a local garage and they got back to him saying that it is probably the rear wheel bearings. The jeep has ~113k on it. They are quoting him "around a grand" as it could be "fairly expensive" any opinons from Jeep owners? thx guys!

Well, should be pretty cheap.

The bearings themselves are cheap.

Ill give you an example. It took three hours to pull both axles, replace bearings, and then replace new axles, thats including wheel removal and dissasembly of everything. Remeber the Axle shaft and hub are one peice.

Just replaceing the bearings should take alot less time. Pop the tires off, dissasembly brakes, pop old bearings out and tap new ones in. Its actually very easy to do if he has some jack stands.

Personally I would get a second opinion or find a smaller shop that will take it apart and find the problem for free. It could be other things besides the wheel bearings and from expirience, lots of people misdiagnose WJ's.

My gf's step-dad and I replaced his in his 1500 truck. The best thing I can tell you, IF you decide to do it on your own, is to take your time. You mess up those bearings and have fun putting them in, lol
