Anyone have one? I am looking to pick up a late 90s range rover. I know the electrical systems are horrible. What are your taughts on the range rover?

I am looking for a winter ride, real 4x4 capability, and room to throw all my stuff when I go camping, kayaking, snowboarding, rock climbing and other things. I want a vehicle that rides like a TRUCK, not a 4x4 that rides like a car. Land rovers are a high end SUV that loose alot of the value due to the number of problems they have. They can be gotten relatively cheap due to this.

Don't want to leave my stuff in the back of a truck, even if it has a cap. I like the seating for 4 adults comfortably in the Rover.

I drive a cavalier, I am used to problems.
Any high end vehicle will have its problems. Rovers are world renowned for there off road ability, unfortunately with that there are issues.

I have been looking at so far RangeRovers.net and LandRoverForums.com
Any other good sites out there?

You'll probably pay out the ass for repairs on a range rover. I think most people buy rovers for status symbols like hummers and not for off road capability. They are supposedly good off road though.

I'd get a tahoe, grand cherokee, or 4 runner. Put a lift kit on any of them and they'll ride like a old truck....

rovers are sick off road. i get my parts at wholesale and I do my work myself. it will still be expensive but it could be worse.

I don't think I am goon to mod this vehicle. would like something nice from the factory. I am staying away from jeeps, i think Chrysler has more serious problem that land rover. 4 runner and Toyota quality sounds good, but just doesn't have the off road capability. I believe some of the 4Runners are 2WD.

You're asking j-body drivers (for the most part) about their input on cars? Just go get one or go ask around on a rangerover forum. I'm sure you could find one through google with a little searching. I say go for it though, love the RR 4.6

get a used cherokee from like 00 that still had the 4.0L inline six
the body will rot and die before the engine

I work as a tech for a LandRover dealership, any problems just ask..I'll help you out. Your main problem though is going to be air suspension. But those years are tanks...you could snap an axle and not even know it until one day you get stuck in the snow because only one wheel is spinning. The big problems with those years, I'd have to say is to do with the air suspension. Unless it's just an air-spring that went bad, it'll cost a lot to fix. Most of the time, cleints just tear out the air suspension and swap in coil springs.

at Advance Auto, a guy came in with a 99 or 00 Discovery, and I ran a diagnostics check on it for him... 15 codes. i think i rest my case

they're bad ass off-road machines, but it doesn't matter if you can never make it off-road to use it

my neighbor had one for a year or two. Was a nice vehicle but it had tonnns of problems. All little stupid crap. Constantly in the shop for the most retarded things. Oh and if it wasnt covered under warranty it was always pricey. Im sure there are a ton of other vehicles that would fit the bill that would be way more reliable.

OK, 15 codes..and?? You do understand 15 codes on "ANY" vehicle can lead to only "1" simple fault. Sry I don't think Landrovers are the god's, but that was just dumn.
Just the car running out of gas can cause over 25 faults..they may not be hard faults..but there still stored...Ne-waz

Edge Thanks. This is the input I am looking for.
I have seen the coil conversion all of them seem to be under $500. That seems to be the worse repair I would have to do. I have not read of many people destroying motors of trannys, but I ton of threads on the air ride.

The powertrain is not bad actually..well now. The engine is mainly a Gm, the transmissoin is pretty sturdy..and the transfercase prob has been changed already with another type. Pretty much all range's and disco's of those years have had the head gaskets done and a new transfercase installed under warranty.
But even if you wanted to go coil springs, and at the same time raise it for off roading..wouldn't be to hard at all..just have to buy longer/stiffer+coils/dampers and your set. Ne-waz Good-Luck, any probs I'll help you out
