i have a 91 Dodge Shadow for my winter beater, and the other day i was driving, and i went to brake, brakes applied for a second, then the pedal went to the floor. when its all the way to the floor, it brakes the tiniest bit so i was able to get it home, but the brakes are pretty much gone.
now the only thing i know about brakes is how to change pads and rotors. thats it. how would i be able to find the source of the problem? would it be master cylinder? or maybe a line came loose and shot all the fluid out?? any ideas? i just need to know where to start looking for signs of the problem?
i havent looked at it at all since it happened, so i dont know if it lost fluid or not.. anything you can provide is much appreciated! also, if it were a master cylinder, how tough is it to replace, and what sthe rough est. cost? trying to figure if i should just go get another $200 beater if a MC would be about the same.
Check your fluid level first, if it is low, you most likely have a leak somewhere
Jack it up, pull all four tires and check to see if there is any visible fluid anywhere. Make sure to pull the drums and check the brake cylinders in the back
Good luck man

i am thinking leak or the master

Don't forget to check all around the back of the master cylinder for fluid too, it could be leaking back there.

definetly sounds like a leak
thanks guys. havent been able to check it out due to the major snow storms we've been having. my cav is in the garage and is unable to be moved due to being on jacks for the body work. so i guess i gotta wait til a clear day
ill post what i find when i can
thanks
all good advice, good luck w/ that easy
dude that happened to me in my cavalier one day, exactly like that
it just so happened one of my back brake lines burst
so id definitely check the fluid level and then the brake lines by the brakes first then go from there
