Scion TC or Corolla XRS
Monday, June 11, 2007 7:31 PM

I'm going to buy a new car next year and after much debating and taking the total amount of cars down from about 12, ive finally settled on these 2.

-As far as looks go I do prefer the TC over the Corolla, but in about 2-3 years I will most likely have my first kid so if the backseat of the TC is really cramped that may sway me to the Corolla.

-For performance I don't need a burner or anything, I'd imagine both cars do the 1/4mile around the mid 15's. What I'm wondering is if anyone knows which is more satisfying to drive. I'm getting the 6-speed in either one.

If anyone with some experience with these cars could throw out some suggestions I'd really appreciate it. Thanks

Well, I've driven both and can honestly say that the corolla is better in most areas. At least from my drives it was. The powerband in the corolla is much more fun too Both will run 15's with a good driver.

I assume you mean a used car, because the Corolla XRS is no longer in production. And whatever you do, do not settle on the base 1.8L, it is a complete turd, and that is on a good day. That engine is the one and only thing I hate about my Vibe. Don't get me wrong, I've driven slower cars, but that doesn't make me feel any better about it. If you want good power, consider the Civic Si, Mazdaspeed 3. Though others may not agree with me, I also like the Cobalt SS and the Sentra SE-R Spec V. They do compromise a little in some areas, but are still nicely powered cars, and you can typically pick them up for a decent price.

I work at a Toyota dealership, but havn't gotten a chance to really drive either of these cars. however, if you drive a Cav. and like muscle cars, than the XRS isn't for you. it has a powerband like a Honda; it produces quite a bit of power for its displacement, but you have to rev the thing up to at least 6k rpm before you see any of that power, and you'll never get it to produce a significant amount of torque (w/o forced induction). The tC doesn't produce as much power, but puts down more torque at 4k rpm than the XRS will see at any part of the rev band. The tC has more comfortable front seats, and the back seats are easily accessible, and have plenty of room for a baby seat (besides, it may be your last chance to get the car that you want more b4 you need to get a minivan or something). Also, Corolla XRSs are rare, you may have to special-order one to get it. if you go for the tC, you can walk on the dealer's lot, pick one that you like, and be on your way in a pretty short amount of time (relatively speaking...). and on the subject of buying the car, I think the XRS is more expensive than a tC, and if you do have to special-order the XRS, you usually forfeit any incentives that the dealer has on the new car. I think that there is more aftermarket support for the tC, and I'm pretty damn sure that there's more TRD stuff for the tC (including a centrifugal s/c...).
btw, the tC isn't available with a 6-speed (it is comes with a 5M or 4A), and the XRS Corollas are all 6M.

personally, I prefer the tC (bet you hadn't guessed...lol), but either way, good luck with your new car!

the xrs has a nice engine and transmission that came from the Celica GTS but its also now in a heavier body thats not as refined for speed. the tc doesn't have as much power but i think its over all the nicer car of the two. if i where you i would look into the Honda civic Si sedan or a madza 3, i wouldn't bother with a mazdaspeed 3 though unless you like having your car in the shop all the time. an S version is more in the lines of what you are looking for

out of the 2 you listed though definitely he Tc all the way

Both very very nice cars. Especially the 4 door Si...

Well the wife already has an 07' cobalt, so I want something different, even though I do like the SS. Yes I did mean a used XRS, which worries me somewhat because the cars are probably beat on. When I was looking around on Autotrader, it seemed I could pick up a brand new TC for the price of a used low mileage used XRS.

Oned thing I really liked about the XRS was the LED gauges, I havent seen the TC's gauges at night so I don't know what they look like. It's not a huge deal, but I am always a little jealous when I pull up next to a car with really bright and clear instruments, then have to look at my cav's dull 90's style ones.

I don't really like the Sentras too much, and a friend of mine has a mazda 3 already. The civic Si would be nice, but It's significantly more expensive then my 2 choices.

Machined silver face, amber gauge & needle illumination. Brightness scale...7.5 out of 10. A lot of people don't like the amber illumination, I've always found it to be easy to read.

Dude, since when are the back seat of tC's cramped?

Have YOU been back there? Trust me... there's plenty of room for 2 people... horizontally or vertically.

He says that because it is Automatic. That is not the case if it was a manual. For what it is, they are peppy. The 1.8L with 126 HP Corolla weighing approx 2500lbs (about 200lbs less then the Vibe) can only move even more quickly. Toyota compacts are very light feeling and fun to drive. 2007 Corollas were registering 33/41EPA MPGs too with a 5 speed.

Go through 3-4 years of having to load your baby in and out of that back seat, and you'll understand. It doesn't matter how big or small the back seat is, it still sucks. All I had was my Cav with my first kid, and wow it sucked to have to do it all the time. Now with the second kid, we have a Vibe and now a crew cab truck - it makes a *huge* difference.

That, I understand. Truthfully, the rear seat in the tC is so far back from the fronts, I could understand how getting a kid in and out would be a huge PITA.

I've never driven, or seen for that matter, a TC, cause we don't have them in Canada for some reason. I do love the XRS. it's got all the good stuff a regular Corolla has, but it has some power. I found it alot of fun to drive, and I love the 8200 rpm redline. But in normal driving it does lack power down low. Plus the corolla XRS does have a little bit of a sleeper effect, even though it's not actually that fast, cause it looks like a regular Corolla S.

Here's my thought pattern... (bear with me, I just woke up so I may ramble a bit)

You said you won't be expecting your first child until 2-3 years from now.... get the car you want. My logic could be wrong on this, but follow me here for a minute...

The tC (speaking from personal experience) is a really fun car. For weighing 3000 pounds, it handles very well. There is tons of aftermarket support, and pretty much anything TRD that is installed by a Toyota dealership is covered under your warranty. It has loads of "luxury" features standard (unless you get the spec package)

The Spec packages (basically a stripped "normal" tC) usually starts around $15,300 for the manuals, and don't have the power panoramic moonroof. The "regular" tCs start out at more, power panoramic moonroof, power EVERYTHING... the 2008's now also offer a navigation system, and loads of other cool features. They are incredibly safe cars, I recall a guy on Scionlife posting up pictures of his car after his wreck, he said he was doing 80 on the highway coming home from work (stupid), fell asleep at the wheel, and rolled his car I don't know how many times. I think his worst injuries were a broken bone and some scratches/bruises.

Now... the tC keeps it's resale value quite well. I was astonished earlier this year when I was wasting time before I had to call the tattoo place back to see if he could do my touchup a few months ago, and me and a friend went to a dealership and were looking at this STI. I looked over in the used lot, and there's a 2006 Classic Silver Metallic tC just like mine. Only differences between my car and this one was that I had 9 air bags, this one only had 3... and the one on the lot had 26,000 miles on it whereas mine only had 11k. The asking price? $17,900. More than double the miles and only 3 air bags... and it was going for more than mine did new (before tax and tags and all that crap)

so I'm thinking, if you want the tC get it... there's no incentives on buying tC's since Scion has pure pricing, but... when you're ready to produce offspring, you may get a "buying another toyota product" incentive/rebate when trading in the tC if you wish for the Corolla. I'd look into it, but many car manufacturers offer "loyalty" incentives.

I hope that made sense, I know what I was getting at but my brain isn't fully "booted up" yet LOL

Point is, if you get the tC I'd be willing to bet you wouldn't regret it. When I bought mine, I really liked the car, but I had no idea I'd fall in love with it as much as I did. If I hit the lotto, I'd seriously buy 2 more. One for daily driving, one for show, one for go.

Yeah I may just have to go the tC route. It does seem to be a great deal for the money.

we don't get the TC because it won't meet Canadian crash tests. the U.S. has lower safety standards for cars. but just from seeing them i wouldn't want to load my kid in and out of it everyday. we take the matrix everywhere because its a lot easier access the child seat in the back.

the corolla is a little cramped for my liking, but im 6'1. there nice cars and pretty quick for what they are. id buy one if the head room was better.
