Kia / Hyundai question (guru needed)
Friday, November 23, 2007 9:40 AM
Hey all...
Yes I know this is not a Cavalier question but all the folks on the Kia sight just don't have the knowledge base that we have here at the Org.

My wifes car is the family mobile though it needs some work done to it to make me content enough to drive it. It is a 2007 Kia Sportage 2.0 M/T.

Just to give you a bit of backround on this car. It has the same 2.0 that is found in the newer Hyundai Tiburons. I am not sure if it is the same transmission though I would bet the same housing. My issue is as follows.

This vehicle is huge... and it only has 140hp. This means that the transmissions gears are geared rather low to compensate. Now on the highway the car is at 4000rpm to cruise at 75mph. I was wondering if those of you that have the access to the information could see about the possibilities of swaping transmisssions or gears to correct this issue so I can get my gas mileage back at higher cruising speeds.

Yes I do plan on making this car have a little more power to compensate for the new gears. I am going F/I. I am leaning towards the turbo though there is a supercharger out for this motor too. Alpine makes both the turbo and Supercharger kits for this car.

Thanks for the help guys. Let me know if you need any more info. I will see what I can come accross.

I know nothing about boost but i would guess you get worse gas mileage. More air/ more fuel. Your going to spend atleast 5k to get better gas mileage?

With proper tuning you can create something called lean cruise. Your AFR would be between 14.7 to 17. You step on the gas. Boost is created, fuel is added and you have your power. I have not yet learned the type of tuning this car has but it does have a MAF sensor so one would assume it is MAF based tuning.

Regardless that is off topic. The question is about transmissions and gearing.

my gf has a 99 kia sportage. my experience with it so far...

get out of it while you can. the timing belt is run around tensioners that are mounted to the water housing and one of them broke (as in the metal casting on the water pump snapped) and threw the timing out. the thing idles funny, stutters, etc (we've gone through 2 coil packs now and have yet to replace the tps or maf). we recently replaced the struts on it as they were shot (granted this is a wear and tear item, but the front suspension design has more ball joints on one side then both of my cars combined and is retardedly complex design) the undercarriage is rusted pretty bad and when we did the struts broke at least two "grade 8" bolts. i hate the thing.

i wouldn't waste money on forced induction, i'd look for a different vehicle.

just my .02

Yeah the old ones were a POS. The new ones are much better. In fact all the new KIAs are much better. Hyundai bought them out. Keep in mind this is a 2007 Kia. Check out its ratings when you get the chance you might be surprised. Or better yet test drive one. It is a really nice ride. Just no power. The price for this one was great. Hands down the best value for a family car that i have found. The only trade off of the low sticker price was HP.

Yeah I like the sportage for the most part. There are some little things I would have done different. But hey room for improvement.

I have a 97 Kia with 140k on the clock and runs GREAT besides the lack of a muffler due to rust, and some other rust issues. Other then that it leaks some oil round the oil pan and just needs some tlc...

gets 240 miles to a 9 gallon tank

anything that has less power and has a cheaper interior than a cavalier is valid for being deemed a pos.

Th engine in mine is rated 140hp out of a 2.0. The interior is nicer looking than that of my cavalier. It is a brand new car so I cant speak to how it will hold up.

in my 97 I have power windows, locks (driver side lock opens and locks all locks at once, nice feature), cd player, 15 inch allow wheels, cruise, everything. The seats are extremely comfortable. I got it for nothing from my fiance's neighbor.

I had a 01 Kia Sephia, the last year of the model.....POS cars!!! Had tons of problems with it....As for the Transmission question, you can swap the trany in the tibby for the one in your sportage for a different gear change im pretty sure....it will def help out with the MPG issue and is also a strong enough tranny if you decide to F/I..... Again i would double check but i think they are a compatible swap....

I think they started to get nicer around 2004+, like I said I coudln't immagine or even thought about them to much other than they were a POS prior to my parents buying one. I was opposed to it fromt he get go, but when they brough this car home and took a small trip in it it was infact super nice (and fast as hell too)

No sh#t, the company is now runnng the "World Engine". Is your transmission AWD?

Yes it is the "world engine" but I skimped out on the AWD. I wanted the 2 MPG better and the $3000 less. But yes there is an AWD tranny that will mount right up to this engine. That would make it a transverse AWD transmission. Nice work Hyundai !!
