only hours into his latest tenure at general motors, bob lutz was back at what he does best, namely, slipping product information to the media and giving enthusiasts a reason to believe in the beleaguered auto company.
Asked about the future of the pontiac g8, slated to end production with the 2009 model year, lutz told automobile magazine the car would find its way into chevrolet showrooms under the caprice name.
"the last time we looked at [the g8], we decided that we would continue to import it as a chevrolet," lutz said. "it is kind of too good to waste."
ceo fritz henderson has repeatedly denied that the g8 would survive as part of another brand, saying he's "not a fan of rebadging."
but lutz, citing export agreements with australia and the fact that the holden commodore is already sold in many countries as a chevrolet, assured us gm would not let the car die.
Lutz also confirmed that the cadillac cts-v coupe was still very much in the pipeline, and noted that members of the government taskforce took special interest in the super coupe.
"when we went through design and looked at the future product, the procession stopped at the model of the cadillac cts-v coupe," lutz told us. "i think that some of these guys are personally going to buy cts-v coupes."
lutz also noted that a cts-v wagon is still a possibility, saying, "i think that'd be fun. I'm sure we'll build at least one."

Not really a surprise that they decided to rebrand it as a chevy, great car. and that cts coupe looks great!
and maybe just maybe bring the UTE over as a elcamino and then you can swap a G8 front nose clip onto it and make a G8 ST
ehhhh it looks better as a pontiac. It's watered down as the chevrolet. keep the hood, keep the headlights, and I'll agree its a good move
the ute/g8st/elcamino would be the only new car ill consider buying
other wise im anti-green !!!!!!!! screw new !!!!!!!

too bland in the front now.. but im sure some unbolting of body panels can lead to the original front end again
the chinese buick verison
So boring as a Chevy. The Buick up there looks okay, but it's best as a Pontiac as far as looks go.
the buick version doesnt look bad
but the wheel designer at GM needs to be fired or hung , and they need a new 1 BADLY
the caprice/impala has a big place in the law enforcement market , and would steal away the market from they dying fords and weak chryslers

chevy badged
i think lutz "the putz" would be smart to bring the caprice over as shown in the pic posted above , it looks a whole lot better
That's the middle east spec pictured. It has no bearing styling wise on the one coming here.
I'm glad they decided to keep it, it would be stupid not to. But Caprice? There has to be a better name than the family sedan from the 90's...

Paying someone to install parts and bragging about it being fast, is like watching someone bang your wife and being proud to raise their kids.
Smart core brand thinking IMO. The G8 was a car that got lots of good reviews. Telling people they still have to option to get one is a great way to keep some sales. That also makes one more rear wheel drive GM car staying in the lineup. They still need to keep the Solstice/Sky in the GM family, though.
2010 Honda Fit LX
I like it, can't wait to see a SS version.
Wouldnt news that the G8 platform is living on help increase current sales??
I imagine one of the reasons people are hesitant to pull the trigger on a G8 or any pontiac for that matter is the idea that once they stop making the car it will be harder or more expensive to find parts and do maintenance..... not to mention who wants to buy a discontinued car?? (Im sure some ppl dont care, but the mass majority does because they care what other people think of there cars even though they rarely admit it).

those SS pics looks good , though that hood is NASTY AS A YUGO
I'm actually surprised. Never thought that the G8 would live on. I'm betting though that it's because they can't weasel out of their contract to Holden and have to sell it the G8 as a Chevy until it expires. Still, it's nice to have one more RWD sedan out there. Especially one as good as the G8. Also, like someone said, maybe they'll bring back the El Camino. Would be rad.
