okay ive found some rust on my rear passanger fender. i noticed this after i had an accident a year ago and it was was fixed by a bodyshop. well i want to fix this on my own.. what steps and equipment and steps would i need to take to do this?
I also would like to paint my rear deums black but im not sure what to do in order to paint them, they also have a moderate amount of rust on them what steps should be taken to paint these?
Thanks for any help
If it was done by an insurence company I would sugest calling them the work should have a warrenty. Why should you have to re-do what they were paid to do? Also re-paiting a car is not cheep. I'd go back and see if you had a warrenty first then if you get nowhere do it yourself.

if the rust is all the way through, you have to cut the metal out and weld in new metal. if its just surface rust, take it to a shop to get grinded down.
well i looked into it and the autbody shop says in their warranty that they do not cover rust repairs no matter what...so i guess im either gonna have to pay or try on my own, i have a good selection of tools, a couple power sanders, a compressor with tools and spray can and other misc things do you think i can do this on my own, the damage is right next to the antenna, and where the fender meets the bumper... can i do this on my own oor should i just have it painted, is there any tips or steps you can give me to see if i can do this on my own with what i have?
thanks
The body shop policy does not matter its the insuence company who paid for the jobs policy that matters. Make a call to them the worst they can say is sorry at best they'll
have the shop fix it. Body shops do not like to be black listed by insurence companies and they usually cave in. Call them you may be worring for nothing.
Good luck.

Thats pretty much the policy at the majority of shops, no warrenty on rust repairs. Now if the area they put on a replacement part, or they went down to metal to apply filler or something, and this area was not rusted before I would fight them a little on it, obviously they didn't take steps to protect from corrosion. Not to be an arse, but it is called a quarter panel, not right rear fender. But I checked your location and seen you were from toronto, so I'll cut you some slack. You probably have different terminalogy there. Kinda like in england they call a hood a bonnet. LOL bonnet. Ohh by the way, cool birthdate you have.
Now if you are doing the repairs yourself, you want to grind all the rust away. If it has pits, sandblast them or at least use a wirebrush on a drill to get the rust out of the pits. If you can poke through the metal or it has holes, you have to cut it out and replace the metal. Do any filling you need with fiberglass filler, final finished with plastic filler. Use an epoxy primer on all bare metal. Some people spray epoxy primer down on the metal first and do filler work over the epoxy primer. This is fine, If the epoxy has sat awhile It will need to be roughed up with something like 80 grit before applying filler. Once you sand the body filler, put more epoxy primer over the top if there is metal after sanding. Then apply a couple good coats of a 2k urethane filler primer to blocksand. Don't forget to treat the backside of the repair somehow.

dont just paint over the rust. thats not fixing the problem. like i said, if its just surface rust, just grind down the area til all the rust is gone. if the rust is all the way thru, well then you have to cut out that area and weld in new metal. its up to you if you wanna do it yourself or not.
