i have 1/4" red "pinstriping" (red detail taping) running around the base of my cavi and the name 'cavalier' is written on the two doors and trunk in the same type of pinstriping (the name obviously being larger than 1/4" tall). the bottom edges of the tape are unsticking slightly from the body and the rear name is beginning to do the same. is there anything i can apply to it to bond it to the car and somehow waterproof it as well? clear coating the entire car is not an option, simply because it may cost too much money. thanks for any help.

Sounds like its time to re-do it. Pep boys for the stripes and any sign shop should be able to make your lettering. Shouldn't cost more then like $40.00-$50.00 to do the whole thing.

Yeah, Just redo it or find other pinstriping you like if you want a change. Hopefully if those spots are coming up, the rest of it will come off somewhat easy. Use some kind of solvent to clear off the glue. Lacquer thinner is cheap and won't harm the paint if it is a factory paint job, or a catalyzed paint. You really don't want to clear over vinyl pinstriping anyways. It would make repair much more difficult and the clear may not adhere very well to the vinyl. Another option would be just to redo the parts that are giving the problems if you can match the striping and lettering.

i was planning on redoing the striping anyway so thats not a problem. is there anything i'll have to do to prep it so this won't happen again?

No lacquer thinner will be fine on oem paint, or a car with an activated paint which most places should use. If the paint is fresh, or its crappy lacquer paint or out of a spray bomb, yeah lacquer thinner can remove it. Did you ever spill gas on a newer car with oem paint. Did it remove the paint?

Ohh and I finished autobody school in 1991, and have worked in a few different shops, as well as industrial painter, bodywork for a yacht builder, so I've been in the trade you can say for 15 yrs

. I quit working in shops cause they pay for crap for the hard work, and you spend the little you make on tools.
