Shaving rear spoiler
Saturday, December 15, 2007 12:07 PM
My car has to go in to get some rear qrtr panel damage fixed (from previous owner) and I am thinking about getting the rear spoiler (01 gt sunfire spoiler) removed completely and filled since the place gave me a really good quote on it and personally I think the 2dr sunfires look nice and clean without them........ However I do believe that it's illegal to only have 2 rear brake lamps on my car (due to provincial laws) so I was wondering if anyone who has removed their spoiler has changed the lamp area that lights up as "pontiac" to a brake light or if that is even possible....

I think it's possible to use the light from the rear interior deck of the Js that came without spoilers. I know some came stock with the third brake light on the inside of the rear window. *waits on J TO ENVY to reply*

It is illegal to remove the third brake light and not have one. like stated try using the deck from a cav or fire that had no wing all u would have to do is pull the rear deck cover off and put the new on on and then useing the light from the spoiler place into the deck should be like 20-30 min. but if u wanna do the logo like u said it would have to be brighter and cant gaurontee that it would pass given its not dot. Then again half the stuff saying dot isnt legal anyway.eaisest way and legal way is do the interior deck swap it came standard so its legal in 50states.

cannot do the interior light since my back window is tinted... and tinted brake lights are illegal in my province.... and I'm not a fan of the interior lights....

you should be able to turn the pontiac light into a brake light. it should just involve wiring your 3rd brake light into the pontiac light. should be a pretty easy trick really.

Someone needs to make me a new sig!

no, you can't use that light as a brake light. that light is your license plate light. if you try using that light as a brake light, it will be off until the brakes are applied, which is illegal. unless you somehow wire it up with dual filament bulbs, but then your license plate will be brighter when the brakes are applied, which i don't think cops will like either.

you can try getting away with not having that third brake light, or simply put a brake light on your rear dash and remove the tint just in that little area.

I don't have a third brake light, but nobody ever notices it. The interior light is your best bet. You'll just have to cut a section out of your tint like cannon suggested.

Ya I realize the pontiac light is the license plate light.... but I'm pretty sure I could still figure out a way to satisfy both requirements.... I do have some time to devise something considering there is a 5-6 month wait for a body shop here right now

My back window on my GT is tinted 15% and my third brake light in the rear window can be seen perfectly fine through the tint. It's not really noticeably dimmer when the brakes are applied. As previously stated though, your best bet would probably be to just put the light in the rear deck and cut a little bit of the tint away if you want to be totally legal. The rear decks that have the third brakes lights are pretty low-profile. I don't think they look that bad at all and your rear window is tinted anyway so no one's really gonna see it except you, that's just my .02 though.

hmmm the rear deck brake light might be a better option.. however I would have to cut out the tint in that area... it's illegal to have any tint on any brake light in my province and i know way to many people who have gotten tickets for it

^ I think cutting the tint would be your best bet then. Although it will look goofy, but at least it'll be legal and you won't have that ugly a$$ stock spoiler anymore !

I put the 3rd brake lite in the rear when i had 1st saved my trunk...It was behind tint, could see it prefect....Best be would be to cut it tho

Yep. I have always hated the Coupe spoilers. The Coupes look so much spoiler-less IMO.

Well, as far as spoilers go I do prefer shaved, but when it comes to other things, I prefer neatly trimmed !
