AFter I let the VHT dry real good and for also after the clear coat. Would it be a good idea to use some polishing compound on it for the light swiirls and stratches if I get any?
Also, Would it be a good idea to use PlastX when I'm all finished?
Thanks in advance
Kevin,
Visit this site...It's what I did for my tails, and they turned out LIKE GLASS. I've had many people stop me at red lights and ask either:
1. Where I bought my tails from, or
2. If I got them professionally clear coated

The secret is the wetsanding....it will take all the bumps out from the rattle can, and smooth it out good.
Some Notes:
- If you only put on 1 coat of clear, I'd recommend applying a couple more
- Let it dry overnight and then do the wetsand the next day
- 1000 grit and then 2000 grit are my favourites
- Keep the surface really wet (I just dip the sandpaper in a bucket of water every 10 seconds, rather than spraying the light with water)
- Once you are done wetsanding, spray the lights with a bottle of water and run your fingers over them...if the tails look SUPER shiny, and are baby bum smooth, dry em off, and move onto the buffing stages in the link.
I was actually mostly going off those exact instructions/link.
So yesterday, I took them out my car, wiped some rubbing alcohol on them, then wet sanded real good with 1000 grit sandpaper.
today, I did the alcohol real quick then wet snaded them over again with 2000 grit sandpaper.
After did rubbing alcohol & auto glass cleaner on them to clean them up as much as possible.
Let them dry real good for about 2 hours.
and I just sprayed them with the VHT (with the spray gun like in the instructions)
So far I'm very happy with it so far, does look shiny, but planned on waiting 24 hurs and clear coating a few times.
But instead of the medium & fine cut cleaner which i couldnt find anywhere, wouldnt polishing compound work? with some plast X for the polish be just about the same?
"Thanks, guys...I've never VHT'd before so it's kind of touch-and-go and I'm still learning.
I only used 800 grit on those tails before I laid down the VHT spray. I used Meguiars polish and wax, but I don't feel that I would've gotten drastically different results with a different product, better or worse. There was no wet-sanding or clear-coat involved on those particular tails.
Her GTP is just an occasional driver/summer car, so if the tails start to deteriorate, I'll re-do them with clear. I was actually sorta worried about that, though. I'll keep an eye on them."
that's from agent omega in the other vht thread in exterior about half the page down.
he says use Meguiar's or at least that's what he used. personally i don't think it's completely necessary maybe some wax, but honestly with a good clear job they should come out looking like glass as it is.

If you have an orbital buffer, you could probably just do a 1 stage wax and have it turn out awesome.
The other coats are not needed, but just recommended because it fills the tiny scratches caused by the 2000 grit.
just to be sure, what are a few examples?
of wax?
Meguiars Gold Class
I use this as a final wax (or just a 1 stage) because it is the best quality for the price for the colour of my car.
