I removed my harmonic balancer a few months ago while doing a water pump job on my 99 z24. I put a new serpintine belt on it while I had it apart, and it did fine for a few weeks then began to squeak then started tearing on the sides. Went and bought another new belt and put on it. This one is now starting to sqeal on start up especially loud on cold mornings, but the belt is not tearing on this one.
When I put the balancer back on I torqued it to the 129ft lbs. like it said. Has any one else ran into this issue after reinstalling the balancer? It has taken both of these belts a few weeks to start sqeaking and when I put the new belts on they have both been silent for a few weeks.
Possible the tensioner is bad?
"Oil Leak ? What oil Leak ? Oh, Thats Just The Sweat From All The HorsePower!!"
You sure the belt is routed correctly. You can actually install the belt the wrong way around the pulleys on LD9s. I helped a fellow org member install his belt wrong at a bash....then helped him install it the correct way. dooohhh.

yeah Im sure I got it on rite. I even went back and checked the repair manual. And the tensoiner was my first thought but before I changed the water pump it wasnt doing this. The belt feels like its on there good and tight. Im not sure if there is a way to test the tensioner or not? All the pulleys look like there lined up good.
is the crank pulley out of alignment? Wondering if its not completely seated in far enough?
Im startiing to wonder that myself. I put it on with a hammer and block of wood, then torqued it like the repair manual said. But it doesnt look like its not seated and it seems like if it werent seated or on all the way it would have caused other problems by now. Not sure if I should pull it off and then put it on again or just try to torque it down again.
the torque for the nut is 129ft/lbs plus an additional 90 degrees rotation. don't know if that extra 1/4 turn will make a difference but you can do it to rule it out. Other than that...i've got nothing
I just re-read the post and see that the belt tearing issue is gone so disreguard my post. If its just a squeal i would say tensioner as was previously mentioned.
I think when I torqued it I did it to 129ft/lbs and turned it like 1/8 turn because of how tight it was getting instead of 1/4. If it is the tensioner I dont know why it started this after I put the new belt on. I'll prolly just change it when I get the money, How exactly do you remove the tensioner on these?
think its a simple bolt in.
spin all the pulleys while the belt is off to make sure they are ok too.
I spun and looked them over real good last time the belt was off. I'll try to get to the tensioner when I get a chance. Thanks for the help guys.
