Cooling fan staying on....
Tuesday, September 20, 2005 8:08 AM
My buddie's '03 has done this forever, I figured it was a newer thing, as mine never had once done it.

Well this past week my '01 Z has done it around 3-4 times, car was off, got out, cooling fan was still running. Each time I just walked away, and like the '03 it eventually shuts off.

Is this a symptom to some sort of problem, or by chance just normal? Thanks!

stick around yours for a bit and see if it turnsoff... sometimes it takes up to 15 minutes on my 02 ecotec to turn off. and yes on the 02 and up on the ecotec motor that i know of its normal but i am not to sure on yours.. i am sure yours is the same but stick around and see if it turns off...

Had you had the vehicle into a GM shop a little before it started staying on?
If so, Iwondering if the flashed the pcm with a program that makes it stay on to cool the engine after you turn off.

it's normal man. I'm no engineer (my dad is though), but I was told that after the car shuts off and the flow of coolant stops, the block and head will continue to heat up before it actually begins to cool down. The fan staying on is just a way of making sure you don't end up with major problems in the form of a craked head or block.

I has to do with some property of metal from what I was told.

The thing that got me was that it had never done it before.

Yes the car was at the dealership not too long ago with the reflash, and both days were rather hot days when it was happening.

I'm sure it's normal, as it does shut off after a period of time.

metal+heat=expansion

and the fan draws air into the radiator not onto the block.

Borsty WHere do you think that air goes after it comes through the radiator? It goes across the engine. It does help to cool down the engine also.

um it goes thru the radiator towards and the front of the car. duh.

it may take hot air from the engine compartment out but it wouldnt have a very big afftect.

Borsty- the fan doesn't push air, it pulls it. It goes through the condensor, radiator, fan, and then over the engine block. The cooling on the block is fairly minimal though.

joe , my 00 has done the same thing and its never done it before

but it depends on the temp when you shut the car off as to wether it comes on or stays off

and mine did it before the reflash also
