has anyone out there changed out their pistons for a HIGHER compression ratio and what kind of gains have you seen. i am interested in swapping them out of my 02 sunfire but wondering how high i should go.
no boost planned.
My question to you is what kind of gains are you looking for?

well nothing unrealistic, actually im just trying to gauge what kind of gains i can get by doing so without problems and if necessary, what do these little 4 cyl engines need to reinfore them

I understand that but you should always have a horsepower goal in mind. And also, realistically, if you raise the compression, you'll need to replace most of your engine parts to gain any real power, you'll need to either run 93+ octane fuel (depending on how high you go) and/or alter your ignition timing. Overall, you're gonna end up spending alot more money to have a good running and high performing all motor vehicle...even that, gains are limited.

By the way, what motor do you have?

i have the 2.2 eco.
i am ok with putting some money into the engine, and really i am not too sure what horsepower to reach for, but i would like to keep it boost free. i am trying to figure out how high i can go and how much i could gain by doing so. to be honest i didnt realize the potential this engine had when i first bought it.
i guess i am basing my goal on getting as much out of this engine without boost or nos.
do you have a way to know what i would gain for power by increasing the compression to 12:1 or so? is it possible to go higher? do you have any other recommendations? limitations?
this is a hobby car now so money wont be an object. i am in the planning stage of my build, so i am not looking to swap a part to achieve a goal at this time.

It's possible to go higher than 12:1 but then fuel and ignition play a big part. You go too high, you can't use pump fuel to keep your car running properly.
Actually, we just had an conversation about going n/a on the ECOTEC vs going boost...very interesting read...check it out:

Also a tip, fill out your car registry so people can help you easier in the future.
