Magnaflow Exhaust
Tuesday, January 31, 2006 10:25 PM
I have a '97 Z and I am currently upgrading my exhaust from the header back and here is what I have so far: pacesetter ceramic 4-1 header, magnaflow 94035 cat, and a dynomax thrush glasspack resonator (25" length, 2.25" in/out). I am looking to replace my current 2.5" catback, since I hear 2.5" is too big, with a 2.25" setup and from what I hear magnaflow is the way to go. I'm wondering if need to get the full magnaflow catback system or whether I should just go with the rear section and get custom piping? I know that the magnaflow rear section with the muffler that they sell at RKSport comes with an inlet pipe but will that be enough to make it back to the resonator? Also where can I find the magnaflow system for cheap? RKSport is a little pricey.

I wouldn't even bother with a catback system, just take it to an exhaust shop and get one mocked up for you. It'll probably end up sounding better, but not only that, it should sound better to your wallet as well.

I second that. I just went in to the local Pro-formance exhaust shop here and ordered a Magnaflow muffler and resonator and had them install it. Sounds awesome!

Wouldn't bother getting the Magnaflow "rear section" or cat-back. Just the muffler you like, the glasspack, and tell the exhaust shop you want 2.25" piping.

Besides, even the single exit Magnaflow cat-back is in the $600 range depending where you look, and that "rear section" deal is overpriced too. Buy muffler, glasspack, and get pipe bent by shop and you spend about half that much.

The only reason why I mentioned the rear section is so that I can get some pre-bent piping because I'm trying to avoid going to a shop. All I need is enough to get back to the resonator. I have all the tools needed and access to a welder for install, but would it just be easier to take it to a shop to get it installed? Just trying to save some cash from having to pay a shop for the pipe, welding, and labor.

No no no no no, I was talking about the price of the full Magnaflow cat-back system, NOT the RKSport cat-backs, or either of their "rear-sec" setups. I said NOTHING about RK Sport at all. The full Mag. system is damned expensive like I said, even the single exit, and RKSport is a lot less like you said.

PerormanceCenter.com
"Magnaflow Single 2 1/4inch Factory Exit Stainless Steel Cat-Back System With 4inch Polished Stainless Tip"
Retail Price:$782.33
Your Low Price: $604.53

"Magnaflow Dual 2 1/4inch Factory Exit Stainless Steel Cat-Back System With 4inch Polished Stainless Tip "
Retail Price:$874.76
Your Low Price: $675.95

So just like I said, they can be in the $600 range depending where you shop. Some places have them for a lot less, but still real f**kin expensive. And I already know Karo's got the RK systems for $300 Single and $400 Dual, but I wasn't talking about them at all.

Back to the question...

Easier to let a shop do it? Yes, you do no work, and they have a lift. Cheaper to let a shop do it? Maybe not.

Find out exactly how far forward the rear-sec goes. If it makes both 90-degree turns near where the rear wheel is, and ends with a straight shot to your converter, measure that distance and get an appropriately sized resonator. Then u should be able to weld yourself. Worst case, bring your resonator and rear-sec to the shop and they'll fabricate the small amount of space remaining, and be able to bend some pipe if it needs it.

Lets see, I just had my exhaust redone using my own cat and muffler. Total with tip, pipe, labor was $190.

Thanks for your help guys, I've just one more question. Is the muffler that comes with the RKSport Rear Sect. good? Does it have a nice deep tone? If not is there another magnaflow muffler that is better? Thanks again.
