2200 Power Theory

I keep noticing how people add K&N filters and 3" exhaust systems and barely crank out 10hp from all those mods. Then they start putting in expensive ported heads and near racing engines.

So i got to thinking that everyone seems to be starting from the wrong end. The problem is that no matter what the hell you do the OBD-II system is just going to be fighting it. So what about screwing around with the onboard computer? A 1994 Cavalier is pre-change right and the 2.2 in that is technically similar to anything from 1995 to 2002? So why not just change the computer completely and chip it?

It'll cost a HELL of a lot less than some of the mechanical acrobatics I've seen mentionned on here.

Anyone know more than me about this? Anyone?

There's a whole forum dedicated to screwing around with the computer:

Buy stuff from CarCustoms Ebay! Won't be disappointed!

Just changing the computer to re-tune it will give you some extra power. But your talking about something that needs to be done with alot of research. If you reflash an ecu and mess up a setting you can have very poor side effects. And just out of curiosity how much do you think your going to get from just a retune?? Many people have proven that you can get tons of power and still be obd compliant. I personally don't see the obd as a problem, you just have to know how it works.

So your right about retuning but

............super 60 on its way

I didn't know the modern (1995-2002) computer for the 2.2 Cavalier and Sunfire had been cracked. Good to know that people have been diligently making my job easier hehe.

Here I was all ready to repin a 1994 computer and rewire the entire car, just so I could chip it and get some good performance out of my 2002 Sunfire. Awesome news. Thanks!

if anyone is using a 3 inch exhaust on a 2.2 OHV thats their first mistake... unless you meant that in an exaggerated state, however i have seen local people with stock engines and 3 inch exhaust.

stock exhaust is barely 1.5 inches before cat, and 1 and 7/8ths (slightly less) after cat inner diameter.

slowing exhaust velocity will decrease power in most cases.

as pointed out there are computer options, but only a few have indulged, most will not take the time to understand tuning a car.

the majority of people will only get to intake and exhaust from ebay or local shops.

basic boltons however have netted people close to 20 HP on a 2.2 ohv....

the base of a 3 speed auto is around 85-87 hp, justin cox with boltons on a 2.2 ohv 3 speed auto pulled 103 hp on a dyno and ran a time of 15.9

intake exhaust TB......full body kit with molded on stuff.

his car among many others are proof you can get power for relatively LOW COST.... however many will not bother to search for old posts, or do any research.

overall, the people who do their homework always get rewarded, hell check out shifteds car above....in car terms hes atleast at a masters or doctorates when it comes to doing homework.

Jeremy Knox.... not exactly chip it....reprogram it more or less. atleast from what i have read and heard from locals who have it in PA.

I really wish you posted more. Theres always so much 2200 info in all of your posts. 20hp for just those mods is an awesome gain.

i'm surprised how the 2200 reacts to mods

boosted my 2200 with a 3spd on 4 psi of boost, a crappy tune and a huge exhaust leak netted me 127 whp... 4 psi of boost was close to a 50% increase granted i also had a little head work done..the car still ran like crap at the track and gave me a 17.6 quater mile time, but i was still on a @!#$ty tune and alot of bugs being worked out on megasquirt..

so now 10psi of boost, a bigger turbo and a hell lot better tune, i might be going to the track on sunday to see how she does
