reading alot about the ecotecs. was wanting to do an engine swap (currently have the 2200). was going to go with a V6 of some kind. but am now considering just dropping an eco in my 99 cavalier. also read in another thread about the electronics changing in 03 i believe it was, so the swap in a 99 will be a little more tricky. a few questions though (some may be stupid)
1.) if a 2.2 is stroked, will it have the 170hp that the 2.4 has? if not...more?? less?? ( 2.2L to a 2.4L )
2.) if i pulled a 2.2 eco out of a malibu w/ an automatic (obviously), will a 5 spd from a cavy or sunfire w/ an eco bolt right on to it?? or did gm do something crazy like shift one bolt an inch over to where it won't line up. (stupid ? i know, but want to double and triple check everything before i start taking parts off)
"magic numbers" from what i found online ( correct me if i'm wrong ), my car (99 cav) weighs 2,630 lbs. (curb weight) my friend's gto weighs 3,725 lbs. - cavalier is around 71% of a gto's weight.; gto's got 400hp - 71% of 400 is roughly 282
so that's my goal. to try and keep the weight of my car around 2,630 and to make around 282hp. so i can go up against my friend and his goat, whichs brings up question 3.) is 280hp acheivable with a 2.2 ecotec??
i know the s/c will put me around 200. 225 i believe w/ the stage II. but will the other stuff get me that much closer? cams, stroke, intake, exhaust...etc...etc...
thanks in advance.
First off you cant overstroke an ecotec motor, the 2.4 has bigger piston bore and a different cylinder head
yea a J tranny will bolt to any eco
280 is totally possible, replace the rods and pistons and your good to 350whp at which point the cylinder head is maxed out

350whp would be awesome. i assume that 350 is the replacement of the rods and pistons on top of all the other goodies. now i just gotta figure out how much extra weight all that stuff is gonna add.
thanks prime
282 can be done on a stock Ecotec no problem, with a turbo kit.

cool. i saw a 2.2 at the local junkyard. i'm gonna have to take parts off a little at a time. i can't afford the whole thing at once. what's your all's opinion on a doing a little here, a little there. or do you feel it's better to wait till you have everything? I'll more then likely be having a shop do the swap because i wouldn't know where to begin. unless there's somebody in my area who knows what they're doing and doesn't mind coaching and lending a hand
extra weight? I dont see how your going to have that, the ecotec is all aluminum as opposed to the 2200 or 2.4 which have iron blocks and are much heavier, even with a turbo and charge piping an eco would weigh less
its better to have the engine all done when you put it in its alot easier, for instance putting a cylinder head on, alot easier when its out of the car

i would look into the ecotec engine build book, it will tell you everything you need for x amount of horsepower.
