Cam removal help

Ok, so I have searched and came up with nothing.
I have my car tore apart, and I'm replacing the lifters and cam. But I can't seem to get the cam out... Is there a trick to taking it out? It's on a 96 cavalier 2.2 . It seems like part of the cam is hitting on the cam bearing and I can only pull it out at max. about and inch and then it stops. Any ideas? It looks like right next to one of the bearing lobes is a round solid piece that is about 1/4 in. wide or so and has a small notch cut out in it, I think this is the piece that is preventing it from sliding past the cam bearings.
I hope this makes sense, and any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Cody.

The cam has to come straight out, otherwise it will catch on the next set of cam bearing journals. There is not but just a few thousandths of an inch clearance between the bearing journals and the bearing, so you practically have to be dead on straight. I usually find the longest bolt that I can find and will fit in the end of the cam and use it as a handle to assist with the cam removal.
