Header instalation
Friday, January 11, 2008 4:20 PM
How long does it usually take a shop to put a header on a 98 z24? I'm looking at getting one but i don't want it to end up costing more for the labor than the header costed. I'm not very handy and my dad "doesn't do exhaust."

will probably cost a few hours labor and that can get expensive.

Also would it take shorter if i got a catback system put on at the same time rather than seperatly? I have a flex downpipe as well (the stock one cracked). How long would it take to install header and whole exhaust system?

Yup get everything shot on in one shot

PS when i installed my Pacesetter header on my 2.4 i had to get a new motor mount cause the downpipe was hitting my firewall under load

Went with the TTR upper and its great

I had a header installed on my 1997 Z24 way back in the last century. The tech guy started at 3:30 pm and was done at 8:00.... he did the complete exhaust>header, aftermarket catalitic converter, and the rest of the exhaust with a 'can' muffler

I bought a pacesetter header for my 96 Z24. I put mine on myself with a friends help. It took us about a half a day. I would never do it again lol there is not much room to work with. I would recommend having someone with experience do it and get everything done at once

depends on the header. i have the RK 4-1 and it was pain to get in. if anything you might have to save a 1/2 hr of labor if you get everything done at once., but the header is still gonna take the same amount of time either way. if you wait its just a matter of cutting the downpipe an rewelding to your new cat back.

Suicide.....your header was hitting your steering rack (i had the same problem) since the back of the engine rotates down under load.

its probably going to cost almost as much to get it installed as the set-up cost. Its really worth your while to set a weekend aside to do it your-self. If your not going to be using the stock exhaust any more, chop it up to get it off easier, some of the bolts will break or just not want to come off at all, so chopping may be your only choice. a saws-all, some jack stands, some random hand tools, a hammer, a good buddy, and a case of beer or two should get it done, and maybe still be cheaper then a shop would if you had to buy all the materials needed for the install (unlikely)

Moter mounts both upper and lower would be the first mod I would due to a stock cav or sunfire. It would definatly be a good idea to due before the exhaust.

If you guys wrench much at all it shouldn't take long. I put mine on by myself in my driveway with hand tools in about 2 hours. There's really nothing overly tough to it, just think your angles out in advance and have a nice selection of extensions and deep well sockets.

im thinking about getting a header and ptting it in myself on my 01 z24. is it absolutley necessary to buy motor mounts or can i just buy the header and bolt it on? kinda on a tight budget.
