good or stupid idea

ok guys this may sound stupid as hell but this popped in my head at work today. mostly it would be on race engine's but has anybody ever tried to run liquid nitrogen through the motor, just like coolant running through but liquid nitrogen. could it even be done or would it be way to cold and mess up the engine. just an idea don't bash the idea to bad.

I wouldn't be putting that through my motor as i'm pretty sure there would be some bad consequences. However, maybe if you were spraying liquid nitrogen onto an intercooler to super cool a charge. If it were something that could be done it probably would be done already but then again have you dipped something in liquid nitrogen and thrown it against a wall? we did in a camp i went to when i was younger and if it had the shattering effect on my car i would definately not want to try it. Interesting idea though.

you do know liquid nitrogen is -346 degrees Fahrenheit, right?

oh and it Boils at -320 something (i think) you your motor would have to run at -320 or it would start turning into gas.

yeah i know its that cold i though about the shattering effect to lol. maybe have the car air cooled no coolant and just spray little by little in the coolant ports. lol its a crazy idea.

oops scratch that idea lol

so now an air cooled engine? i say go for it if it works (and i'm fairly certain it won't) what do you think happens when you're driving down the road in your liq.nitrogen cooled car and run out of gas? where are you going to get all this liquid nitrogen to keep the thing running? i think you should look elsewhere for your cooling needs and leave the liquid nitrogen to its intended uses.

no i was not going to do this to my car. but the air cooled has already been done. there is an air cooled porsh that does the track corses in cali i believe.

FYI, lots of Porsches are air cooled.

i dont know personally, as a coolant definitely not, as a spray for spray on your intercooler to lower intake charge temps yea that woule be sweet. i really dont know honetsly but if it really worked it would already be on a car, its probably just to unstable of a gas to use with a motor

LOL. Thanks for the correction, but the old ones didn't all come off the road when they stopped making them.

The whole idea of blowin it thru and intercooler has already been done, but instead they use CO2. Cryo2 has that system.

horsepower is the force that determines at what speed you hit the wall, torque is the force that determines how far you take the wall with you after you hit it.

Believe it or not, I've seen back in the day guys spray directly into the intake tract aft of the intercooler Freon! Made a hell of a number on the dyno, but totally illegal today.

The bugs and beetles are air coold as well, since they were Mr. Porsches creations.

Could reroute the a/c to the intercooler, lol.

You can't use air an a coolant where water once was. Water absorbs a LOT more heat/energy for every degree in temperature rise than gas. You would need so much gas its not even funny, like seriously ridiculously crazy since the specific heat of N2 is 20.8 [Joules / (mole * degree Kelvin) ] and water is 74.53 [Joules / (mole * degree Kelvin) ] . Now you might look at that and say "O thats only 4 times as much or so"....see the "mole" term on the bottom is gonna kill you. One mole of water is 18.0153 grams/mol and nitrogen is 28.0134 grams/mol. That adds to the difference in WEIGHT or mass of the "coolant" required to have the same cooling effect as the current water based coolant. So run the numbers real quick for N2 it is ~.7 [ J / (Grams * Kelvin) ] and for water is ~5 [J / (Grams * Kelvin) ]. This says 1 gram of water can hold more energy than 5 grams of nitogen. So lets say it takes 10minutes to heat the (just a guess) 2gallons(16lbs/7300grams) of coolant in the enigne, it would require 52,000 grams(114lbs) of nitrogen in the same amount of time.

Air cooled engines used alot more surface area to cool AND moved a crap load of air around it.....rateable in tens-of-pounds/minute, plenty to pull off the above required mass rates needed.

Josh: Like the use of "mole". My high-school science teacher used to have a banner announcing what the value of "mole" was outside is classroom door. You may have even seen him on "Late-Night with David Letterman" showing the effects of blowing packed flour across an open flame or how nail polish remover can be used to break-down styrafoam waste. Forgive me if I forget his name just now.
