Secret Tune???
Monday, July 14, 2008 12:46 AM
I just had my Z24 tinkered with by this old mechanic, and got some more power out of the LD9. He spent less than 10 minutes with it with some hand tools. Unbelievable? I know.
I have no idea what he did because it's his secret. It gave me better low-end torque, most noticeably on the first and second gears. High end has improved as well.

He said that generally, it gives the car between 5 - 7 hp to the wheel. He got this figure from the dyno back in the day when he was still a tech.

The engine sounds different, more bass-y when idling and louder all across the range.
The only thing he would tell me about his secret is the theory. He said that he "adjusted" the revs so that they will match my shift points better (???)

This guy used to work at a high end shop in Vancouver, on old Porsches, Ferraris and Jap rockets. He showed me pictures to prove it.
This little secret tune works on any car, and he's done it to a Camry!

Any of you ever heard of this type of tuning?

The biggest catch is that it only lasts for three months.

An oil change?

^Yeah did put a heavier viscosity in? I've heard of that being done on old cars with bad lifters to pump them up. Heck, for all you know he put 80w aircraft-engine oil in! That's supposedly another old "performance" trick.

The 3 month statement is what pushes this into total BS territory.

Ok, seriously, there are no tricks out there like that at all, they'd be all over the net. For that matter the same people who made the fuel atomizing molecule line-up bullshiat that you throw on the fuel line for a 80% increase in fuel economy or the fags that produced the cyclone intake treatment for a 40% mpg increase would be all over it making even more stupid crap.

Jack, im sorry but dont even try to defend your butt dyno.....PLEASE.....all you can do now is go and beat the hell out of an old man for being such a TOOL!!!

I dont know whats worse..the fact that somebody robbed the kid out of money and lied to him about "tuning" it....
or the fact the kid actually BELIEVED the car was faster..

^^^Yeah, the IAT-relocation mod is an old trick. About as old as the begining of the age of computerized muscle-cars (Think 5.0 Mustang & Buick Turbo-6 cars). And the hole in the airbox, well... That's as old as rodding itself! But even the combo of the two won't net you that much gain, IMHO. And neither will need to be redone in three months, or ever! Sorry Jack, but from what all I've learned in ASE-Cert training & from places like here & in mags, looks you've been played. And if you had any real knowledge of automobile tech, you'd see that too or would have at least thought to ask for an explaination as to how-all it goes.

I know it seems like you're getting flamed heavy here, but there's one thing everyone who enters into this hobby must understand: Those who "dable" in auto performance like when someone comes-in with enthusiasm, but have no patience for those with empty heads. In other words: Get knowledgeable! Open some books, tear-down & re-assemble an engine &/or trans, take a course at the local annex if you hafta, but know WTH is going-on in order to make the machine go before you go into this expensive, time-consuming hobby.

And be aware... There are several unscrupuous people out there looking to make a buck offa anyone not in-the-know, and enthusiasm combined with it only increases the number of cons they succeed in pulling & cons pulled. And as long as empty-heads prevail, so shall they. This is true in any aspect of auto performance, whether it power of efficiency. Be wise & you'll be alright, and you'll be ahaed as well.

He actually did it for me as a favor. Cost me nothing... He's also going to show me how to change my rotors and brake pads next week.

Well, judging from my first every post here on jbody.org, I must say that this has been a complete waste of time, not to mention that the responses really pissed me off. What is the purpose of having a forum when elitism stifles any frank questions?
...removing the cat...cutting a hole in the airbox...putting in a heavier viscosity oil...? These suggestions make me sound a lot less of a tool than one of you commented me to be.

If you don't know, then you don't know. Why assume so many things?

Lastly, I used to work for a chevy dealer so this isn't exactly the first car I've driven. I know when a torque curve has shifted.

What a waste of time this has been.

Oh and in case there's anyone out there who's SERIOUSLY trying to figure out what the tech did, my setup is a short intake, 2 and 1/4 piping and a 2 1/4 inlet muffler. Tuner tube was taken out when I first bought the car.

What is the IAT mod?

Honestly, if no one has anything constructive to say, just move on. I'm not about to take my car to a freaking dyno just to check to see if I gained 5 hp to the wheel. Just think about it.

Fine than don't believe it. I'm not pointing a gun to your head and trying to make you believe anything. Why don't you do something more productive, like start a new thread? I've got an honest question, and I'm not going to keep my mouth shut just because some douche takes it upon himself to disprove it, and be an a$$hole in the process.

What did you expect? You came on here praising a "secret tune" that ONLY LASTS 3 MONTHS! Everything people have said WAS constructive, it analyzed your story about how you gained 5-7HP from who knows what but only lasts 3 months.

What do you define as "constructive"? "Wow, sweet mod, sounds cool!" or one actually looking into it and why or why not whatever he did would do anything.

its not that we're trying to be assbags, it's that in fact, to actually FEEL a difference in power in one of these cars, you need to have gained at least about 30 hp at the wheels. a "secret tune" that lasts three months? it doesn't exist my friend. he TOLD you it happened, so you THINK it happened. same principle behind octane booster. people buy it all the time and tell me that it made their car ZOMG SO MCUH FASTER YO!!! no it didn't, you paid for something, so you want to believe it worked. the "deeper" sound you hear? he probably moved the iat, the car is dumping more fuel, COSTING you money, and now the car is bogging a little bit now because it's running richer than than it usually does. "adjusting your revs so they match your shift points" is also not possible unless he has access to hptuners, or some other computer tuning software, as your trans is computer controlled. a "more bass-y when idling and louder all across the range" exhaust note? check your cat, it's either gutted or replaced with a tuner tube. sorry to rain on your parade, but what you are claiming just ISN'T POSSIBLE with these cars.

Welcome to the JBO.

Just because we choise to drive and mod J-bodies does not mean we are idiots that know nothing about cars. Everyone that has posted has alot of knowledge about cars. We are trying to understand what he did, cuz i know that everyone that read this thought about doing this mod(s) to their J, if it was legit.

As for your car feeling faster, mine will feel sluggish somedays(like it just wants to rest) and on other days it feels like it just wants to run its (tiny) balls off.
