Installed ECO big cams, but no TUNE yet. Spark plugs shot?

Hey,

About a month ago I installed some custom ground colt cams. They make big power up top (4500 to 8500 rpm). I know I'm running really rich right now, cause I can smell the gas at idle; besides, the car stalls all the time when at or close to idle. I've been trying hard not to race it that often, but it does see high rpms now and then! I just got new spark plugs (IX Irridium xtremes). The car has only been driven for 3 weeks with the cams. Check engine light comes off and on. I can't tell if my cavy's spark plugs are bad and reason I'm asking is because I;m wondering with all that richness, are they screwing up my spark plugs? When my last plugs went bad or weren't that good anymore, I would notice it in high revs! Now I'm running lean up top and hardly feel a difference with these cams. Bottom line is that I wouldn;t mind getting new plugs if I need them, specially the Pulsestar spark plugs, if they work? Anyone used them?
I want the best tune ( just this past Sat installed Control Arm bushings, tranny mounts, & upper engine mount) Always wanted them but made sure I got em for the tune! Better torque readings I would imagine.

So, should I replace my spark plugs before I tune it?

did you upgrade your injectors?

they're probably clipping like crazy.

PJ,

Funny you wrote in, just last night was checkin out your cavy videos! Nice dude! Got ways to go... I got the cobalt ss 36 lb injectors but was told can only put those at the tuning shop! Otherwise my car wouldn't even get enough fuel to run. So got to wait. This sat, hopefully if the guy is available. What's clippin by the way? Think I can still put the new injectors in anyway?

Thanks

clipping is when the injector basically never shuts.
it gets the command to open before it closes, which leads to duty cycles greater than 100%
the upper most limit for a fuel injector is 80-85% duty cycle MAX.

basically, you lose control of your fuel anything over that, the injectors are working too hard, overheating and eventually they will get either stuck open or stuck closed.

the cobalt SS injectors are a good upgrade for a mildly modded eco, and since you have an 02, they should fit your rail without a problem

use HPT to resize the injector constant in the ecu and you should be golden.

the only thing you MIGHT need to get is the small plastic spacer that sits under the injectors.. I can't remember for the life of me if the 2002s get that from the factory or not.

Sounds good. Can't wait. Might be a while before I'll ever see 14.0 flat! Just trying to extract as much power from this setup right now, don't want something like bad plugs to rob me lol..Glad the injectors I got will work. I'll look into the spacers, see whether I need them, thanks... Any idea what (tuned) rpm I'll be able to hit without an upgraded valvetrain or head. 7500 rpm sounds mean.

I'd stick around 7000 at the max. Especially with big cams.

did you upgrade your springs at all? valve float can become a pretty big issue early in the revrange from high lift cams.

speaking of which, any specs on your cams?

No upgraded valve springs. Do I really need them? I can get them if its going to help a lot. Specs are:

Intake: 265 degrees duration @ 0 lift
Exhaust: 262 degrees duration @ 0 lift
Lift: 0.398" on both cams

when i had huge eco cams from colt I noticed more then fuel issues. My timing advance was almost nil due to such wierd over lap in the valves my ecu was thinking knock so retarding 8 degrees 90% of the time on any % of throttle. y car was running in the mid 11's afr's till about 3k due to vacuum issues then after that went nasty lean, I had 6 codes thrown, rich, misfire, vacuum, i cant remember the rest but this was pre-hpt. My specs were .422 lift and 278 duration.... car loped like crazy guys at the track asked to see the motor cause they thought I had a V8 in it...

I would have loved to see them things tuned

the 02's don't have the spacers only 03-+

I can also confirm that.

Should have got the Comp Stage 3, but I hope these cams will give me decent power. Think I have at least what you'd call Stage 2's? I thought I'd be in between stage 2's and 3's. Honestly, don't really know what all those numbers mean. Even when I've researched it, not sure how to label these cams as far as "Stage" goes. Anyone can tell me from my specs if I'll be making "strong" power?

Thanks

Heres my thoughts of Stage 3 cams for the street:

1. The speed limit is 45, highway is 70, you can do both in 2nd gear
2. You need to rev to the moon to make any power, yes even an aveo or a metro could beat you for the first 100 feet
2a With the high revs your gas milage goes WAY down
3. You need HPT tune for sure, duh
4. A better choice my opinion, stage 2 or even Stage 1
4a Both cams make more power than stock with better driveability
5. Best to upgrade the valvetrain with the Stage 3
5a Cams + Valvetrain + HPT + Dyno tuning = $1500 ish

Stage 3 for the dragstrip:

1. For me im 5000+ and higher the whole run, after launch
2. Nobody cares about gas milage
3. HPT is a must at least, i tune in 3rd gear, still makes 193 WHP
4. With adjustable cam gears you can fine tune your power curve
5. Hang on and shift as high as you can, cough cough 8000 rpm

thats all for now, hope this helps

I'd have to agree with Ben, most won't need or want the stage 3's as everyone is calling them. I have them and I shift out of second gear at 74mph or so. The car did well at the strip for being NA and yes it's very fun to drive on the street. But on the highway if you want to accelerate you're probably going to downshift or going up even a small hill. Kindof annoying and the car won't idle quite right so with motor mounts you get some extra vibes.

All in all I like them but for a daily driver I think I'd go with something else. The Cams, valvetrain, & head probably cost me $2500 without gaskets or head studs etc.... something to keep in mind.

Alright. Car is TUNED by HPT. I hit 158 HP and 156 TQ to the wheels. Needed 6 Dyno Pulls. Started with 133 whp before tuning. Those numbers come at 6300 rpm. Redline is set to 7000 but I drop down after that. Nice to go over 108mph. Just got home, took a long bridge and buried it! The car definitely pulls hard from 4300-4500. Spark plugs were fine. Had issues with "spark knock." Not sure what that meant, but that got fixed. The exhaust tone is way different now after 4300 rpms. Sounds higher pitched I think. Lookin forward to more mods now for sure!

158 sounds pretty good to me. Not sure what your other mods are. Should be alot of fun.

Not too bad, what dyno did you use?

Every dyno is different. What's important is the changes you made increased the power. Take it to the track, we'll see what it traps

NA with those cams and a head my car was almost 98mph which isn't too bad, hopefully you see similar results.
