2.3 rebuild
Wednesday, October 01, 2008 8:40 PM
So i got my cavalier almost a year ago, it lasted about 2 or 3 months and the engine died on me. The people i bought it from decided that it would be a good idea to put a lot of sugar in the oil, i'm guessing that they thought it would thicken the oil and hide some valve tick or something. The sugar ended up clogging up the oil passages in the engine and didn't allow oil to get to the top end. The car sat for a while and i just tore apart the engine earlier this week. The oil pan is pretty ugly. I would like to get a little more performance out of it while i am doing the rebuild, i plan to port and polish the head. What else could i do that wouldn't be too expensive and easy to do. I was thinking of some higher compression pistons, but haven't looked at any so i don't know really what is available for this engine. Any advise, tips, or anything is much appreciated. I will get some pics up soon to show what the sugar did to the engine.

Forged pistons, Eagle rods, HO or W41 cams, ported & polished head or 086 head, HO intake if you don't already have one, Ron's header and 2.5 catback.

other than port and polishing the head i will probably get some rods and pistons, what is a good website to get rods and pistons for this engine?

Sorry my bad I know Ron's name from surfing over on quad4forums I didn't know it wouldn't fit, but if you made a header for a 2.3 in a Cavi you should market it and make some money. There are a few here who run the 086 or 2.3 head on their cars who could use a header that will fit.
As far as where to get your parts check with The Turbo Shop here on the "org".

Once more, what are you after?

IF IT WERE ME,

LG0 Block, W41/HO cams, at least 10:1 (stock LG0) pistons. 086/955 head

Rods you don't have to mess with, stock there fine.

good luck finding new stock LGO pistons.

your probably going to have to get them custom made. In wich case you should go with 12:1 compression.

expect to spend at least $400

I'm in the process of redoing/rebuilding a 2.3 bottom end. I am probably gonna have the crank reconditioned polished. new rings and bearings. thats it. a budget rebuild!

OR if he wants stock, he could by them from a member here....say... ME?

but your right, good luck finding them

and its "L" "G" "ZERO"..... not the letter "O".....

I dint want to spend a lot of money and i dint really want a huge gain in performance. Just a little more hp would be fine. The stock pistons i have are fine, i would like to get some higher compression pistons like 10:1, thats it.

10:1 is stock.....I would still find a running HO though.. they go for around 400-600 on car-part. they way you get rid of the @!#$ty oiling at the same time, HOWEVER you will have to come up with a PS pump and brackets.

the stock compression is 9.5:1

Re: 2.3 rebuild

.......

for what?

a LD2, your right, but WE have been talking about LG0's..or in nube terms..."HO"

Stock compression for a LG0 (now ill speak like you haven't read anything about this motor\ or used google) IS 10:1.

.......

yup,...hes right. HO is 10:1 stock compression

Re: 2.3 rebuild

Yea but the 95 Z24 with the 2.3 engine had the LD2 not the LG0 so he would have 9.5:1 cr not 10:1.

Re: 2.3 rebuild

And if hes putting a new motor in, why not just get a LG0\HO long block?

Re: 2.3 rebuild

because he has an automatic..or i would have suggested it myself a long time ago..
his ld2 has 9.5 pistons and if he can find some stock HO pistons hell be able to bump it up to 10 without much more cost
he already had bigger cams than the 2.4 so PERSONALLY i wouldnt worry about it..he cant tune as easily as we can ..
so do the head port work..get some HO pistons..find an HO intake manifold AND exhaust manifold and port the crap out of the exhaust mani..and you should have a nice little gain
