Tuesday, October 07, 2008 5:41 PM
ok the build is done and i got the car to fred to tune it and he calls me and says it seems to be burning oil . i gapped the rings to the right gap.so the other options are now head gasket and the valve seals. when i was cranking the engine to get the fluid moving i forgot to unplug the fuel pump. because the haynes maual says to do that . mention this is with out spark plugs, but i dont know what it is smg has my ca and i need some help here.

leak down test.
Did you install the rings correctly. There should be a top side on the rings and the gaps in the rings should not line up with each other.

even if you did line the rings properly, until they seat (sometimes over 1000 miles worth of actual loaded driving) you'll burn oil.

this is why i always say get a shop to do your dirty work such as this. if this is f'd you your motor is f'd up.

When i first started my motor i had no smoking at all up to 29,000 miles when i sold it.

as stated....I wouldnt be concerned....but also, could it be just running rich???

How many miles are on it? Per the haynes manual there is a process to help seat the rings, but still it could take a good 1000-1500 miles to seat them. I would just drive it and get it broke in.

It is going to smoke and or burn oil until proper break in. What type of rings did you go with? Not sure if you can get moly rings for a 2.4 as i haven't looked into it yet. But it usually takes a good 3000miles for everything to break in real good. What i honestly would do is run is easy for 500miles checking the oil in between and at 500miles change the oil. Cut up the filter and check for nice size chunks of metal. Then run it to 1500miles and do the same. At 3000 miles total on the engine change it agian and it should all be fine.

What ever you do, do not break a motor in while real rich. It'll wash the cyclinders down and more than likely the rings will never seat for some reason. Also don't go run the piss out of it with in the break in. But don't drive like a grandma either. It takes pressure to seat and break in the rings so boost will help it out just don't stay in it the whole time. At 3000miles you can also switch to synthetic but i would probably wait to 10000miles or so but that is just me.

Also If it is moly rings have fun. I've done the motor in my t/a twice the first time it took almost 8000miles to get the rings to seat. I was just driving and more less out of no where i noticed it got a little better power and get smoking/burning oil. The 2nd time it took around 3000miles. Nothing was done different at all.

Yea have it tuned. You wouldn't want it running lean or to rich would you. In all honesty i'm not sure as to what all is in you build that is new or aftermarket. By aftermarket i mean cams, p&p head and such. Also i don't know what the car is tuned for already if it all. But if it doesn't have alot of mins on it or miles you might want to put a few on it to make sure it isn't going to blow apart for some unknown reason at say 6000rpms on the dyno. Put it this way If it will run and do it safely say between idle and 3 to 4 grand (Trying to stay out of boost if not tuned for it or posibilty of going lean) i would take it easy on it and put a few miles on it to make sure everything was good.

But don't drive it around if you know it needs a tune for to long. If the motor is done right which it should be. It will be fine to take to redline on the dyno for tuning. Basically though by what i meant for breaking it in. Don't go and run the piss out of it every time you can or going out racing it at first. Try not to stay in high rpms or boost for to long while driving but you can drive it like you would a normal car not what its built for. Until broke in. On the dyno it isn't going to be in boost or high rpms for long so it won't hurt it.

everyhthing is new and aftermarket.lol

Re: burning oil

i figured that. i see you are boosted also. Has the computer been tuned at all for it? If not get it tuned right away. Heck get it tuned to be on the safe side first because like i said it should be fine on the dyno. If you are going to drive it there just take it easy on it there. Make sure it's making good oil pressure and is topped of on oil/coolant before driving it to the dyno though.

After tuned i would break in like i said earlier and you should be fine.
