aftermarket speakers, stock HU
Tuesday, May 17, 2005 2:51 PM
Does anyone have the stock HU hooked up with after market speakers? I don't really want to replace my radio. I'm not looking to have a loud system, I just want to clean up the sound at a higher volume. Pretty much after 2/3's to 3/4's volume the stock system sucks. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Jason

With my experience (Pioneer 6.5 coaxials up front with stock HU) I wasn't getting enough Watts to my speakers and they were dropping off at lower frequencies, causeing them to make a "whump" sound. Pretty annoying.

I was referring to "wysiwyg" since there was no statement whether it was good or bad.

some people will like the sound some wont. some like above noticed a lack of mid bass. this u wont acheive without throwing some power at them. but your midrange and highs should be dramatically inproved over stock if you buy a quality set of speakers.

The problem with GM non premium head units is the louder you turn it up the more the bass drops off. They did that by design in order to prevent blown speakers that were still under warranty

I still have the stock HU. From what some of the above people have stated, you should use an amp with the aftermarket speakers. The stock HU will not have enough output power to get good quality sound. I have Pioneer Quad 6x9's in the rear and Pioneer 4x6's in the front. I am using a 280 watt amp to run them. It sounds good! Maybe not like some others with subs, but good to my liking. The 6x9's handle the amount of bass being sent to them with no distortion. I wanted to keep the interior looking stock. Keeps the would-be rip off people from stealing stock items.
