Plastic Coupler in blower...

I'm not sure if the M45 and M60 units have these, but I just received a free M90 that my buddy pulled off a Buick that came into the shop with a bad banging sound. The official repair procedure for the blowers is to just replace them, so he took the old one home. After pulling it apart, the only problem is the plastic coupling that transfers power from the main drive to the rotors. These seem to go out pretty often and I was wondering if I would have a problem if I replaced this with an aluminum unit? The only reason for using plastic that I found was a guy speculating it reduced impact loading shock...and nobody seems to make any sort of solution...
Also, can you load these things with synthetic motor oil instead of the GM lubricant? After opening this thing up in my garage I can smell it from down the street, and no amount of air freshener has masked it. This stuff smells so bad I can barely breathe in my garage now
Oh yeah, anyone want to place bets on whether or not this monster would even fit under the hood?
