Officials said the New York Police Department plans to buy 15 police versions of the 2006 Dodge Charger for a pilot program that will begin this summer.
The police highway unit will test drive 10 Chargers with V-8 engines, officials said. The rest will have V-6s and hit city streets in the five boroughs.
In a recent analysis by Michigan State Police, Chargers equipped with a V-8 engine had the quickest acceleration (6.52 seconds to 60 mph) and fastest lap time (150 mph) of any police vehicle tested.
"The car that does 110 mph doesn't do it anymore," said Leonard Lesko, the NYPD's director of fleet services.

It makes sense. Give the cops cars that can actually hold up to basically most cars out there. Problem is, like they will ACTUALLY use the power though.

They use those in Indiana. I got pulled over by a black one exactly like you're describing. It was quick too because it was going to opposite direction on the highway and I was doing about 95 and he managed to stop, turn around, and catch me before I get hit the offramp like 1/2 mile away.
So he went like 300mph to catch you?? LOL jk

The have a white Magnum around Spokane, WA. They call it Casper. It even has personilized plates on it!!! The lightbar is just above the dash and very hard to see. I saw it at a carshow next to some other cop cars and didn't think anything of it until it got dark and they turned the lights on. I now watch out for it on the roads.

Around me on I-194 & I-55, the state police cruise around in unmarked Black Camaro's & Mustang GT's. Their modded too so you can't exactly outrun them, and they have nothing that shows it is a cop car until they fly behind you with their lights in the windshield & visors turn on. Pretty cool stuff

The highway powlers (unmarked radar cars) here are mostly Impala's and Suburbans, but I think the Ontario Prov. Police are supposed to get Mustangs, but that'll probably turn into Chargers or Magnum's now.

What happens if it misses and hits someone elses car? What if the car they hit crashes causing more problems then before?
i think that once all cars are equipped with drive-by-wire throttle, there will be no more car chases
Here in NYC the mayor wants to put some light on top of the car that shows when you go over the speed limit. . . thats never going to happen. when you speed the light goes on and then a cop is supposed to pull you over? if the traffice is all going 40 in a 35 then the hell is gonna happen. i just dont see how that will ever make it to any kind of reality
There is no efficient way to do it. You would either have to tear up the streets to put in sensors, or like frickin speed limit signs with barcodes on em for the cars to scan...and everybody always goes at least 5mph over the speed limit...
Here in Denver the PD uses silver Impalas as highway undercover pursuit cars...

seriously, i drove from 9th & 43rd to the Holland Tunnel and it took an hour... that's what, about 25 blocks?

these ones were all white, like the crown vics are, and just have the search light on the side.
lucky for me, they werent cops driving them, they were slaes people.... i blew by the both of them
