My next car...
Thursday, February 15, 2007 8:22 AM
I should probably be bowing my head here as it's not a j-body, but I'm excited.

My Sunfire's gonna go into storage for a little while as I can't afford to insure both cars, but rest assured I won't be getting rid of it. She's still my #1.

God willing, I'll need something practical enough to put a stroller and baby seat in sometime in the next few years, so I had to keep that in mind when looking for something new. The Sunfire just isn't practical enough for me anymore now that I may need to park outside all day every now and then. It's just asking for trouble to leave the Sunfire unattended all the time in the same place.

So I'm gettin' a family wagon. Woot.

Not bad also what about a Golf GTI or Jetta 1.8t? just a idea, but also not a bad choice that you have there either.

I'm just not a fan of VW. I wouldn't consider the Jetta since I want the convenience of a hatch to load stuff in.

The 5-door GTI is just too small. The 3 has a couple cubic feet more trunk capacity and it's already a bit smaller than I'd like. Also, since they're almost identically priced but VW is charging 1% more for financing, it might actually end up more expensive.

heh. He's like my inspiration. Except I'm keeping my j-body rather than destroying it...

I really need something for the spring. Since I moved in August, I've been driving to work every day. It's not bad since I carpool, but the guy I carpool with is looking to move downtown. Without that option, it'll be more economical for me to take the GO and I can't be leaving my Sunfire in a GO lot every day. Bad things will happen.

So I need a car for the spring.

heh. Whatever car I buy now, I'll have for at least the next 5+ years so I have to consider this. Otherwise I'd just get another coupe. Or hell, I could use a Solstice to commute or something.

Thanks man!

Wagons are the best! Did you look into a Subaru at all? I'm totally in love with mine & I bet AWD would do you good! The Mazda looks nice though.

Re: My next car...

I looked into Subaru but my wife flat out didn't like the Impreza and the Legacy was too much money.

I wasn't too gung ho on making the case for the Impreza since I can't afford the WRX anyway.

Sad They'll run forever and retain value like nobody's business! You could always go used for the Legacy or more attractive Impreza, although that retaining value thing kind of makes it painful to look at how much they cost even used!

Good luck with whatever you choose!

I take it the man wants something reliable.

I am glad to read that you're not abandoning the Sunfire. Also nice to see that you did not jump on the SUV/Minivan bandwagon either (no pun intended).

BTW your option is a very wise choice. Saturn Astra would have been good too, but it comes out in early fall.

Godspeed dude.

I actually looked through the entire GM catalogue to find something comparable and the closest fit I found to what I think I need would have been the Malibu MAXX.

The fact that the SS version only comes with a 4-speed automatic tranny pretty much sums up how modern and well thought-out that thing is.

Maybe... maybe not. I've been whoring it up a bit on http://www.torontomazda3.ca/forum/

I signed up on m3f because someone had imported a car from the States and I was looking for advice, but the exchange rate hasn't help us at all since then so that option went out the window.

Then I read this thread...

And it was painful for me to not just rip into just about everyone posting there for the utter idiocy of it all. Of course, I'd just be some Sunfire owning troll raising hell so no good would have come of it. The level of misinformation there just didn't make me too enthused about being a member there.

yeah i wish GM used the 6spd from the G6 gtp in the malibu , ida been all over that , but i like the sedan over the maxx

Oh I hear you on that. I get so frustrated at just how stupid some of the people are about THEIR OWN CARS, then you add to the fact that they know absolutely nothing about the competition (yea, they like to say echotech alot). That's why I need you there, I need some more intelligent people to talk to, haha.

On a side note, if/when you get the car, we all just recently were able to unlock the radio to allow the driver information system (trip computer) to show up for the models that it doesn't come standard on from the factory. Pretty cool stuff.

Yeah, I saw those posts. Very cool for those who didn't have it!!

The Speed's already got it though.

I just REALLY wish it had the nav system available in Canada. I looked into importing one specifically so I could get that but to no avail. It just got too expensive when the US dollar started rising.

Luckily, a company has produced a replica screen that looks exactly like the OEM nav screen. With a Garmin unit hooked up to it, I'll be all set.

I'm not saying it's a bad car. I just really want something with a manual tranny if I can get it. My second choice ended up being the Mazda6 Sport (hatch). You can get the loaded up V6 with a manual tranny. It ended up being more expensive than the Speed3 though.

That sounds strangely familiar.

I wish I had more options 2 years ago when I was in the same position. I definitely would have picked a Mazdaspeed 3 over the Vibe. Of course at the time money was the most limiting factor. Still, 260+hp does not suck for a family wagon (130, on the other hand, sucks the big one, I hate it).

Oh and seeing more old-timers like you buying outside GM makes me feel better about some of the vehicles I've been checking out lately. Its about time for me to leave the family wagon for my wife and getting myself something I really like. I just can't decide what that will be yet.

Might I ask why you didn't consider the CX-7? Was that a little too big for what you were looking for?

Re: My next car...
Thursday, February 15, 2007 2:39 PM
My wife absolutely loves the CX7 but you're right. It's too big for what I want.

Dave, it's funny you mention the Vibe. When I started looking around, I was totally going to get a Vibe! For years now I've thought it would be the perfect next vehicle for me, but a couple things killed it. Firstly, it's the end of the model run so getting into one now, the interior doesn't seem near as nice as it did a few years ago. Now it seems a bit dated. Secondly, and the big killer, is the fact that you can't get the GT anymore. They killed off the one I wanted.

It's a shame that GM or Toyota hasn't announced any sort of replacement yet. It would be nice if I knew that something excellent was coming out that was worth waiting for, but them's the breaks I guess.

They haven't officially announced anything yet, but its no big secret what they are doing. The design of the Matrix is going to be based on the Blade (Japan) http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/02/toyota_blade2.jpg . The are also some spy shots which give some decent hints as to what the Vibe will look like: http://www.leftlanenews.com/2006/10/12/spied-redesigned-2008-pontiac-vibe/ Its fairly certain that they will stay on the Corolla platform. Most likely this means the same wheezy 1.8L engine. That really is too bad, because the engine is the one thing that is sadly lacking in the Vibe/Matrix. The final versions of both of them should be released in the coming months.

Looks nice... but did they make it significantly smaller or is that just how it looks?

They should really get in the game with a hot version like the Mazdaspeed or SRT4. I mean... GM has the engine. Can't Toyota design the platform to plug in an Ecotec?

Of course, that's a whole other discussion...

I can't wait. VROOOM... PSSHHH!!!
