Monday, January 30, 2006 11:19 AM
hey, I am looking at making a set of LED tails for my 2000 sunfire. been reading up on this and realized I havent gotten a clue what I am getting in to. I am curious to know what size led's and how many mcd's they should be? I am alos looking to use them in the winter so are there certain ones i should buy? Is there anything that I should know about this job before I start it? any help would be greatly appriciated. thanks alot
Broda

patience, patience and more patience to start with.

I'm using 3000mcd amber and 5000mcd reds on mine.

Others are using brighter ones (which I'm considering for the brake lights).

As for where to get 'em, ebay ones are just as good as LSDiodes.

For the resistors that you will need, go here or here.

A resistor is a resistor is a resistor... As long as it's the proper amt of ohms/watts for the LED's (might have to run the calc's above) they will work. I believe that they ship the resistors to LED's at 1:1, so you probably are going to have to buy some that are of the proper resistance... Use LSDiodes for that.

As for mounting you have several options

1) Plexi sheet with holes drilled so the head of the LED fits snugly (epoxy on the back side to hold 'em)
2) RadioShack pre-drilled perf board
3) Custom designed/drilled PCB.

That's as far as I have gotten on my project thus far. I have the lenses from IZN and am still figuring how to mount the LED panels and the lens itself.

From LSDiodes (prolly cheaper than Ultra cause it's in USD, not sure...):

I have had real good luck with ebay member mckenkenken.
His store link is
http://stores.ebay.com/LED-Store_W0QQsspagenameZFAVQ3aFQ3aSLLRQQtZkm

I think his prices are real reasonable, and his shipping was really fast. Hes located in LA so shipping is not a problem. I was sceptical about other ebay LEDs because most are from hong kong. I have the 5 mm 6000 mcd amber and red bulbs for my LED projects....like $.99 for 10. Hope this helps

All mine came from one of the Hong Kong sellers...

http://stores.ebay.com/uBiditnow-LED-Shop

Out of the I don't know how many thousands of LED's I have currently, only 4 were DOA.

Thanks for the link Dennis, I'll check that seller out when I need more.

Good to know the hong kong sellers are ok though. I was worried about what happens when it goes through customs or whatever is has to do to get here. I didnt want them lost in transit. Thats why I went with a U.S seller.
