is it really nessacary to get new head bolts when taking off the head?
thanks
Highly recommended. The stock ones stretch once torqued, and if you were to reuse them, and re-torque back to spec, they would stretch again and become weakened and you then run the risk of a blown head gasket.
Well what if the head bolts are only 10 months old? i mean i know that they stretch. so i guess regardless of how long they been on there they are ruined afther the first time you use them?
Pretty much yea. Once GM torques them on, they are stretched, age doesn't matter. If you can find some, ARP studs are the best, although somewhat expensive. A set for the Ecotec for example costs about 140 bucks online. I'm not sure if ARP makes a set for the LN2 engine though. But if it were my engine, theres no way I would skimp on something as important as the head mounting fasteners. I'd rather pay 140 bucks for some bolts/studs, then have to pay 3 times that amount to get a new headgasket and the head gasket surface re-finished, not to mention any labor costs if you get a shop to do it.
There is a set for the LN2 motor. I had them from when I bought my pnp head, but I never installed them and I lost them when I moved. Sad I know, but there IS a set.
New head bolts are a must. Like previously stated.
