Light weight body panels?
Tuesday, June 12, 2007 6:53 AM
ok so im going to be going N/A with this car. maybe nitrus one day. so im not going to be making massive power, so im gonna wanna lighten this car up as much as possible.

so im looking for opinions on what to buy and from where. obviously Carbon Fiber is light, and thats fine with me, ill probably end up going that route. but are there any other materials which are considered light weight?

and does anyone know of anf companies who make light weight or CF body panels for an 03 Sunfire?

thanks guys!

well......they dont offer a cf trunk lid for the coupes...so basically, start with the hood, maybe fiberglass fenders. strip interior of ANYTHING not needed. remove AC if possible, if you want to get real crazy they do offer carbon fiber doors but they are not meant for street use, and are $700 per door i think

Class glass makes doors and there are some cf fenders out there but I think they are only the stock metal ones wrapped in cf. Other then that there are various hoods and trunk lids in cf. Trunks I think JSP and VIS make them and class glass makes one that is painted so you cant see the weave. Actually I think all class glass cf parts are painted now cuase to many people bitched about the weave not being 100% perfect.

@!#$ man didn't even notice that you have a fire Honestly I think all cf products for our cars are glass with cf laid on top of it. So if that is true I would assume that glass is lighter.

now here is the big question... is this going to be a street car?
if it is, ac delte, interior stripping, fender liner removal and CF doors probably are a no-go.

if it's not a driver, then i would definately delete the AC, remove the entire interior, less one CF racing seat and an aftermarket steering wheel. and of course the gauges. get rid of the fener liners, spare tire and jack, trunk carpet, trunk arms and skeleton, pin the lid on, cf hood, cf doors, and even better yet, i think there is a 1 piece racing front end available if ur going extreme...... these are the only things i can think of to make it as light as possible.

On the other hand....you have other fingers.

carbon fiber is allot lighter then fiberglass. but also allot more expensive so the majority of companies out there just use fiberglass and then a carbon fiber top coat. has nothing to do with fiberglass being lighter, has to do with the company saving money. that and the fact that if it a pure carbon fiber hood it would be even more expensive.

ok

so aside from the hood (cuz i can find those easily)

where can i get either CF or fiberglass body panels?

god, to be honest... i cant see how a 'full' carbon hood would help much more than the majority of ours out there that are glass with CF layed over top.

mine is a vis, and i know for a fact its just cf layed over fg.. but the damn thing is so light NOW, i just dont see how another half a pound would (just guessing, but seriously it cant be THAT much)help.

even so, the stock J hoods are DAMN light compared to most other cars, but my VIS is like a feather compared to even them.

my JSP trunk lid, i do believe its actually CF all the way through and the skeleton is fiberlass, that thing is DAMN light as well.

those carbon fiber doors are NOT street legal, cause if you get into an accident with them, you're probably dead.

look at what Karo did with the slowfire, cause he put that sucker through one hell of a weight loss program.

take out everything to do with the wiper's.. just keep the windshield waxed or rain/exd constantly and u can get away with it (if you drive it in the rain that is)

take out the folding section of the back seat (its pretty damn heavy)

obviously, spare tire/jack

swiss cheese your bumper supports

not much, but pry good for 100lbs

take out the carpet and remove all the sound deadening material and scrape off all the strip caulking that sh!t is heavy and adds up real fast and grabyourself a good hole saw and take some weight off your bumper supports remove spare tire and jack cut out spare tire section and seal it with something light like plexiglass and silicone. remove rear seats (keep both front seats though cause it will just look tacky) remove ac, condenser and all lines a friend of mine did everything i mentioned to a sohc auto neon and it took almost 4 tenths off his quarter-mile time. not bad for a free mod and nothing except for the back seat is noticeable because he kept the carpet in and kept the liner in the car to hide that aweful looking plexiglass.

just to add my two cents on this stay away from class glass's so called cf doors thats so misleading. i ordered sum the other day and they looked like crap. they were cracked and they had no room to place a lexan window. and im sorry but those fake cf tail lights look better than the doors. as far as losing weight cf hood and trunk help out alot. and ive been through 2 sets of cf fenders the fiberglass ones dont ine up too well and the overlays arent bad.. our fenders are pretty light anyways.

does anyone have any numbers as far as how much our stock fenders weight as opposed to some fiberglass ones?
