Ok an idea popped in my head for you sunfire guys(i was admiring my cuzin's 02' WS-6). Has anyone thought about putting 4th gen Firebird/Trans Am taillights on your fire?
They look like they have the same general shape in the quarter panel, but i know they would be too wide if you used anything.
I think that they are skinier than our fire's are I looked at them because my best friend has a firebird. But I never liked the mesh honeycomb thing with their lights.
Not all of them had the honeycomb. I believe it was 98 when the started the mesh thingy.
good luck. taillight swaps arent as easy as everyone makes it out to be.
sure they are as long as your an expert with fiberglass... lol

hope your an expert because you'll be redoing it over and over and over again. something like a tail conversion should really all be welded.
The honeycomb finish was part of appearance packages. It was in the WS6 package as well as the SLP firehawk. The V6's and some base model Trans Am's did not have it.
I used to be a 4th gen F-body guy... this is what I remember to the best of my knowledge. I had a camaro so Firebirds were'nt my forte as far as exterior wise

My cuzin is a f-body guy, 96' 5-speed firebird as a DD and a 02' WS-6 for play. So most of the specifics i got from him.
Just have a Honeycomb vinyl decal made & apply it to your tails lights for the full effect.
Meckster did this on that orange Cavalier that he had...
Somebody should have pics of it somewhere I think...

Im talking about the actual taillight conversion, not about just getting the mesh on my lights.
The idea is awesome... A whole lot of work involved though. I love the look of the honeycomb tailights, I used to have a set on my firebird. It would definately be a cool and original mod.
Ok the honeycomb is on all 98+ Firebirds or Trans Am tails. The checker pattern was the Lt1 style firebird or trans am tail lights. Early 93 and 94 V6 Firebirds had no pattern overlay at all.
If you want I can take a pic of firebirds back end next to my sunfires for comparison.
didnt mini trans am (or someone) do the honeycomb on their fire tails?

I did the honeycomb on my tails & married MTA

Pic of tails in my registry, they're the same as day 1 back in early summer of '03.
I have additional pics on my computer if anyone wanted to see, although this thread is about an actual tail swap.
I had looked at doing it but I couldn't get a set of the tails for a decent enough price so I went against it. The problem is having to cut apart the whole trunk since they're twice as wide as the fire tails. But they would flow quite nicely as they are very similar in shape. If someone wants to donate me a set of the tails I will put them in my fire but I need the wiring harness too

yeah i thought those were actually fire bird tales? i wish i had a pic of that..
Meckster did it the same way I did, he emailed me to ask how I did it. There's a pic in my registry.
I made a pattern in Illustrator & took the file to a vinyl shop. They printed/cut it out and I had them install it too, I took the lights to the shop. The lights are so curved & the vinyl is so thin, I figured I'd let the pros do it. It looks the same today as the first day years ago, I'm very pleased, especially for being there through all sorts of snow and ice. People that have seen it don't even know it's vinyl unless they run their hands over it, the guy did an awesome job!
Here are some old pollen-covered pics from when I first put them on
Its pretty cool, but it looks weird to have the reflector on the trunk next to it left without it. If i was going to do it, i think i would have to do that too.
It's not a reflector

I didn't do it because there's no way to wrap the vinyl around to "seal" it, ya know? I agree, if there way a way, it would probably look better that way as well.
Thanks

Sometimes I think I should peel it off, like it was part of my earlier phase of modding and I'm over it. Meh. Maybe if I had real honeycomb tails I'd think otherwise
