Where to start.
Friday, March 07, 2008 1:50 PM
Hey, i'm a long time reader first time poster.
I am 17 and am fairly inexperienced with Cars in general, but I'm doing my best to learn more. I have done quite a bit of research on the net and have done a fair amount of reading on these forums. I also apologize in advanced if this should be in the newbie forum, I wasn't quite sure so I hoped this would be the right forum..

Anyways,
I'm currently buying an 05 2Door coupe Black 2.2L Cavalier, and I'm interested in modifying the body. There are virtually no dings, zero rust and not absurdly high KM's (57k).
Here's a Picture of it:

Now I'm just wondering (this has been the hardest part for me), where should I start? What threads, websites etc could point me in the direction of where to buy, how and or where to install pieces and just generally prevent me from being completely lost. Where did you guys start? How did you start? etc.

Any information would be infinitely appreciated.
Thanks.

I started at the junkyard by gettin a 2002 trunklid, spoiler, and taillights. I hate the taillights on the 03-05.

I'm sorry, you're absolutely right. I should have been more specific...
I'm looking to add a body kit, possibly rims, exaust etc. Not in any specific order and is a question I should have asked really; what order should it be done in?

I would assume the bodykit or the rims should come before the little things, like exaust, hood scoops, window tints, etc.
But yeah, main thing I would think, I would like to get done is a bodykit.

Thanks for the quick reply btw.

Seriously, as far as body kits, hoods, etc., you can't beat the info on the org.

i would statrt looking for a black PRE 03 trunk lid... like tinkles said. that will be the best mod you can do (in my opinion) to your cavi. i did it to my silver 03 cav about 8months after i realize i can do it with no mods. straight bolt on.

order i would go in.

pre 03 trunklid swap with your choice of 95-02 tails (mabe even toyota tails)
17" rims or even stock ls sport rims which are 16"
ebiach sportlines with d-specs.
and a oem 95-01 vert strut bar.
and if you happen to find a black trunk with spoiler holes already get the 00-02 z24 spoiler.

rims and lowering should be done before a body kit. otherwise it will look very out of place.

95+ Cavalier and Sunfire Convertible Service Manual! A must read for vert owners!

Here is a little teaser of what my 03 looks like with 2002 trunk, spoiler, and taillights. I love how it looks compared to stock.
I know the trunk doesnt match the car in that pic, its cuz the trunk has fresh paint that has never seen dirt and well yea, my car is dirty.

Thanks a ton for all the info folks, really appreciated.
Guess it's time to research how much this is all going to cost me, and start doing the math.

First, fill out your profile so when you post up questions, everyone knows what you have.

Second...rims and lower the car are the first mods I'd do!

Then start looking at body kits to see what would look best with the rims and the ride height you have chose.

Also, depends on your plans...are you going to go fast or look good...or maybe down the line both? I think most start out to look good and then want to go fast but that factors in there...with such a clean Cavy...go with looks first as a simple cat-back and intake will add enough kicks to keep you happy for now!

Nice looking Cavy you have there....if it was me...I'd find a LS Sport kit and call it a day personally!! Sure you could locate the parts in the junk yard and would be cheaper than a full body kit.

Rims and lowering though...that would be my first priorities...that's what I did first before anything else!!

Good luck and look forward to your updates!

Eh...old man with a Corvette now...it was bound to happen sooner rather than later right?

another good thing to star with would be painting mirrors and door handles, even though the car is black and the mirrors and handles already are, sanding them down and having them sprayed to match the gloss black of the body would be a nice touch, small details like that are always good to take care of
