am i being bamboozulled??

quick question..

living in miami, fl

i take the cav to find out what's causing the Check Engine Light and the "check oil light"(thinking it's the sensor) to light up..
i'm being charged $45.00 bucks for that..no other work is being performed.. that price seems kinda steep just to see what's wrong...
am i being a little cheap and that sounds like what the cost should be???
or am i being BAMbooZULLEd??@!?!

Key word, SCAN it... Scanning it is not Daignosing it.... $45 is nothing.

Scan = Diagnostic tool telling you what code the computer is giving you, you then have to follow the 'diagnostic tree' to find the cause. $45 does seem a little high from my experience, but i live in the middle of nowhere...

$45 is pretty normal across the board.

When my GFs Saturn had a CEL, the saturn stealership wanted $90 to tell us whats wrong.

Needless to say we went elsewhere.

i work at a pontiac buick gmc dealership as a technician, were located in northern virginia and our labor rate is 97.50 we charge 1 hour labor to look at a check engine and if you think about all that is involved in diagnosing it 1 hour is well worth the money, i can show you a dtc trouble chart and see if you guys can figure it out in 1 hour.

yeah, 1-1.5 hours is normal to START diag, and shop rates are mostly $70+ an hour now.

you do the math.

hmm.
i bought a scan tool when it was on sale for 40$
then when my light comes on I scan it
and google the number that comes up
or go here and see what the code means
and then someone will have done a write-up on how to fix it... usually
it's free
i like it

yea you can get a cheap scanner that just reads the codes for you, then you can always look it up and fix it for free.
