i have a 2200ohv cav and im not used to having lots of power.... BUT lately my problem has become a bit excessive.
symptoms
100,000 miles
second gear doesnt drive the whole way through (shift at 4700rpm (while on the floor)
when rolling, if i push the pedal to the floor, it doesnt downshift, it just basically floods gas and tries to accelerate.
some "tripping off the line" i.e. i push the pedal, the rpms drop, catch, and then go, rather than just going.
seems to idle a bit rough for me... its been like this for a while, but its getting worse now.
ideas?
fuel filter?
fuel pump( hope not)
i added some fuel injectore cleaner a few days ago, no difference.
mod* to engine bay
WAI, A/C delete
it has been like this since my oil pan gasket, valve cover gasket, and trans pan gasket were replaced.
please help me. im going to south carolina on friday and need to solve this and get it fixed before then.
maybe while replacing the trans gasket you didn't fill the trans all the way with ATF? im not really sure, that doesnt sound like a motor issue, sounds more like trans....
it is mostly filled, though i admit it does need a little bit to get it to "perfect" level. should i take it back and have it redone? they used white RTV sealant which from what i heard is not up to par for more then 120 degrees.
its an automatic right? maybe your torque converter is slipping on the flex plate? it kinda sounds like your transmission is slipping to me. doesnt sound too much like a fuel related problem but im not in the car with you lol. hope ya can get er fixed and not at too fancy of a price
Silly ricer, useless wings are for penguins.
How long has it been since youre car has had full tune up: plugs/ Wires / fuel filter / Air filter?.
tuned up at 90K miles (no fuel filter done then) but its almost to 100K now.
is there a way to tell if it is indeed the torque converter? im guessing that the converter isnt exactly a cheap fix.
also, the car shifts very smoothly through gears, but when taking it from Park to Drive, it seems to "drop" into place. sometimes hard, sometimes soft. im assuming that is normal since it has been that way since i bought it.
change the fuel filter and work from there.
good plan, ill take care of that tomorrow. the car seems perfectly driveable, but its mileage has also gone down a little. ill know exactly how much when i get to south carolina friday. last time i made the trip i got 380miles to a tank. and filled 11.25 gallons to get it to full... thats pretty good in my book.
check transmission
sounds like the trans filter might have been disturbed and you're either not getting sufficient fluids or a little air with your trans fluid.
why the oil pan and valve cover gasket?
the valve cover was leaking, and the oil pan was also leaking. they asked if i wanted to do the trans pan while they were there, and they gave me a good price. im wishing i would not have done the trans now though.
can they check on the trans filter, and transmission when they pull the pan again tomorrow?
if they find metal on the pan; that's not a good sign
im having them check that out too... i dropped the car off for the evening, so they have all night and day to work on it.
Good deal.
it sounds like second gear is going out.
when I had a bonneville, the transmission was going out.
3rd gear was slipping bad and the transmission started leaking fluid.
Stop leak tranny fluid was useless because it needed major repair.
Plus it had a V6 3.8 and it was a gas eater. I sold it and bought me a subaru legacy
point A to point B car. and that's all I need.
anyway, good luck with your car. Hopefully is not the tranny and something else less expensive to fix
ill know in the afternoon, i told them to do it right, take their time, and let me know whenever they find anything peculiar, or anything that could be better than it sits now.
so
what's the word? thunderbird!
i have a continuation post below this... not good news,
basically the car feels MUCH MUCH BETTER after the work... but i have a new problem. check out that post the urgent post a few down and see what you think.
