Im always used to numbered gauges and stuff, just wondering if im having any issues. Im not suffering any driving issues, just dont want to overheat the thing.
Normally, my gauge will be from 1/4 of the way to half, but sometimes its up to this high, as seen in this picture...
is this normal? im guessin it gets this high before the fan kicks in, then drops it down to halfway again. Like i said before, i just wanna be sure and i dont wanna blow my daily driver up, it gets good gas mileage!
oh yeah, its a 98 cavalier, 2200 OHV
All gauges are designed that "middle" should be good.. It will depend what thermostat you are running for where is should be. as long as it doesnt get close to the red there should be no problems.
It was fully serviced before I got it in august. Im thinking someone put a 195 degree thermostat in there instead of a 180.
Stock is 195

it's running fine. just be worried if it starts creeping towards the red.
the red is there for a reason.....unless it gets to red there is no problem
har har my engine's rough accel is worse when it is up 2 marks past 195. That's normal for the Cavy b/c GM in their infinite wisdom decided that the fan need not come on until the temp is 20F higher than normal. As long as it doesn't go any bit higher you are OK.
I had a Honda Civic, and that thing never moved it's needle more than a hair's width when the fan would need to turn on. Of course, once it started going up past normal normal that means you are screwed in about 15 seconds.

yea i had the same problem when i got the car its normal for the cavalier but it would be wise in about 2 months get a head job done and you will see the difference. i did and it doesn't even get half way and if anybody charges more than 4 for the head job there bugging.
no that would be unwise since he doesnt need a head job

Actually, halfway to the red from normal normal can cause problems with combustion, as the higher temps can cause pinging and sometimes even detonation. 1991 Ford Explorer, 4.0L V6, temp moves from the "O" in C|_NORMAL_|H to the "A" in NORMAL. With such little distance between "A" and "H" it is a bit alarming, yet it doesn't overheat, but I can physically feel a difference when it's running on "A" NORMAL as opposed to "O" NORMAL.

My cougar, 4.6L only goes a quarter of the way, thats what im used to, in the summer, it MIGHT hit halfway if I have the AC on. I think in just gonna flush the fluid and do the cooling fan mod. The car actually runs better when its like that, a little past the middle, so i guess its normal.
you cant sit there and compare the temp of this motor to any other.......they are all different. especially when you try to compare "normal" zones.

yeah, i understand that, but i was just comparing for S&G's. Like I said before, im used to the gauge being 1/4 of the way, anything over a half i naturally freak out. I just need to get used to it.
If the fan comes on and it goes back down, it's fine.
