I just bought a 97 sunfire gt with a 2.4l twin cam w/automatic tranny. Now i was wondering compared to 3.1/2.8 v6 engines how good or bad are they for breaking down and haveing problems. I also use to own a grand am with the older 2.3L quad 4 ho engine and i hated it i sunk more cash into fixing that engine in one yr then i spent on some cars in 10. I will never own a 2.3l twin cam ever again,,,but how good are the 2.4 twin are they also bad....should i get rid of the sunfire....im kinda scared after my 1st experiance with the 2.3l. Ive also has a 2.8 and 3.1 cars and they work great imo.
As reliable as any 2.3 except the SOHC. Reliability is greatly affected by the owner.

2.3 Ho
There are 2 2.4 in my family, my '99 and my husband's '01. We haven't had a single problem with either, the '99 has about 90,000 miles and the '01 has about 110,000 miles. We're on top of maintenance & don't constantly tinker with things.
^^ like mentioned if you keep up on maintenance your car will be good. its just like any other motor. just take care of it and it will last you.
