Check engine light ? Serious ...
Wednesday, March 26, 2008 10:17 AM
Hi,

I have an '01 Z-24 and today my check engine light came on. I looked and i had little oil left. So I added 2L of oil but the light didn't go away. I imagine I have to reset the code.

Is this serious because I maybe drove 10 min. after the light came on ? Also, will the light go off ?

Thanks

Gabriel

Well i put synthetic oil and it has been 6,000 km since my last oil change. It's not normal, but the car runs great other than the oil going away quickly. My mechanic said i could change it at 8000 km but that's hard to believe. The car only has 100,000 km and i take it pretty easy on it. It's my winter car and I have my cobalt ss/sc that I'll take out in a month or so when winter ends.

Anyways, any ideas to what i could/should do ?

low oil will not cause a check engine light. even if you are using mobil1 full synthetic, i wouldnt let it go past 3000 miles.. not sure what that equates to in kM though...

A while back, I got my oil changed at Midas, and they @!#$ it up somehow. Turns out I was leaking it and I had no idea. Still being extremely new to cars, I didn't check it or anything until one day I had this very not good sound coming from my engine. Turns out I was driving the car for about 3 days with approximately.. uhm... zero oil. That's right, none. How my car didn't seize to all hell is a mystery to me, but I didn't get a check engine light. Something else is wrong.

Damn, that's not good. It's just a coincidence cause my Check engine light came on and then i really didn't have much oil. So I added the oil.....

I went to a local shop to run the OBD2 and the code was P0440 Evaporation emissions.....

So, could it still be that ? The fact that my car didn't have enough oil cause some emissions problems?? Or is that really not it?

Thanks

ps. I guess these cars should only do 5,000 km (3,000 mi) before an oil change even on synthetic.

I keep my oil changes to 3k miles, and I check every so often now to make sure that it's not going to die on me from lack of oil >.>

If it's an Evaporation Emissions problem, it could just be that the gas cap wasn't put on right in the last week or so after you filled up. It happened to me, and I just got Autozone to clear the code for free, and it never came back. I don't think they can do it anymore though, so see if you can get a shop to clear the code and see if it comes back.

The code has been cleared. But I just hope it doesn't come back.

It came on while I was driving and I filled up like 3-4 days ago.

Yeah, it took a while for mine to come on as well. I hope it's the gas cap so you can go back to enjoying your car, I know how it feels to think somethings wrong, it sucks

I'm watching this thread & may contribute after today...

My husband's 2.4 was mysteriously out of oil early last week without a trace of a leak or a sign of burning off, it NEVER leaked before. Yesterday he got 2 codes, one was the evap and the other was something about it not being able to read how much fuel is being used. It's being dropped at the shop this morning, if I get info as to what it was, I'll share.

It wasn't a shot at you... but I was talking to you.....

you said you where driving your car without oil in it..... and I was asking you if your oil light (idiot light) in your dash ever came on or not....

I don't trust that the lights will come on in time (prefer gauges) and was wondering if your actually did or not...

Evap code will probably lead to a vacuum leak. im pretty sure thats the same code i had when my MAP sensor hose rotted out and was leaking. the MAP couldnt get a proper reading, car eventually threw a code. not saying its your MAP hose thats the problem, but i am betting on a vacuum leak.

When I got my car checked out yesterday, it gave me the evap code P0440 ....

Can this be caused by a lack of oil ??

From looking through threads of the evap system, it shouldn't be related to oil. But your car & my husband's both had no oil & evap code, so I have no clue what that means. I will let you know what's up when we get info from the shop, the car has been there since about 7:30 this morning.

My husband's dummy light didn't come on for no oil btw. His first indication was knocking He also runs synthetic & never had any indication anything was wrong, so who knows how long it was empty. You'd think we'd at least have a spot in the driveway or oil in the engine somewhere.

Yes, definetely keep me posted. I'll bring mine in tonight and get some new oil. The idiots at canadian tire ran the scan yesterday and told me that i had filled up my tank while the car was running ....... Anyways, at least they cleared the code. I added 3L of oil yesterdayl. My engine runs fine right now, but I hope nothing was damaged and it will be ok until my oil change tonight.

Best of luck to you too and I hope your car will be ok too. (Your husbands that is) I guess I'm glad i got the indication but I could smell some burning though, i'm a little worried.

If I clear the code, would it come back right away if it was serious, anyone know ?

No, it didn't come on.

I mean, it was literally right after my first oil change ever. Who would have thought that you could trust a reputable company to change your oil and not @!#$ it up? So naive...

I have a 97 Z24. It has an oil level sensor in the pan but there is no inputs to the PCM to use the Oil Level indicator light in the dash. Pretty sad!

I guess you have to wait until the oil pressure light illuminates.

Forgot, it's the 2.4L with a 5spd manual.

i wrote: 0440 relates directly to the evaporative emissions system. the parts that it monitors include (from stern to stem): the gas cap, the gas fill neck, the gas tank, the gas tank pressure sensor, the vacuum lines running from the tank to the evap canister, the canister itself, the valve on the canister, the lines from the canister to the purge valve, the purge valve itself, and finally, the line from the purge valve to the intake manifold.
if any one of these 16 parts is faulty, it could trigger the 0440. the most common place to begin diagnosis is with the gas cap, as if not screwed on tight enough (by yourself or the gas station attendant) -or- if the rubber on the cap has degraded enough to not make a seal, then this code could be thrown. a gas cap should not cost more than $6-$8 at your local parts tore. next, a visual inspection of the lines to see if any are cracked, broken, kinked, or otherwise pinched off/leaking. if, after these inspections have been made and determined to not be the cause of the problem, i wold recommend getting your emissions system smoke tested.the parts after these simple diagnoses can get quite expensive depending on where you get them from, and as such, you'll only want to change the part thats causing the issue.

Car is back and fixed. We have no idea what happened with the oil, they didn't find any leaks. Evap problem was something about a freyed wire. Good luck figuring yours out!

Well since I erased the code and did an oil change, I drove maybe 150 km and the light hasn't come back on yet.

I just hope it doesn't come back cause I'm selling the car in a few weeks.

Thanks for the update.
