tire rubs on 1 side of car

hey .. gf has an 04 sunfire .. 215/45/17's new tires ... i found out the passenger side tire is rubbing slightly in the back of the wheel well when the tires are turned outward.. if i turn the wheel the other way the driver's side doesnt rub...

something bent maybe? just find it odd that there's clearance on the driver's side but not the pass/ not taking it to a shop yet seems minor.. thinking even the car might have been in a coollision before she bought it

This may belong in "wheel & tire", but I'm guessing that maybe the offset is wrong. Have these wheels been used on another J-body? If something was bent that much, I would expect some serious tracking issues when running the stock wheels, as well as abnormal tire wear patterns.

yeah i had to pick a forum... suspension/brake, wheel/tire, maintenance .. i'm assuming its a car problem not a wheel issue since its just one side.

wheels are 17x7.5, 40mm offset.. bought from another j-body owner

sounds like you may have a bent tierod end. Most likely the outter, but possibly the inner. Take a look at them and if nothing is bent and everything looks good take the car in for an alignment.

If something is bent, hit up your local parts store and get a new tierod end (assuming that's the problem). I would suggest buying 2 inners/outter, whatever the problem is (one fore each side just so they have the same ware charactaristics). It's not a must, just something i'd do to keep track of the condition of the car more.

Good luck eh.

oh, i forgot to add, if you decide to change the ends yourself obviously you should still take it in for an alignment afterwards.

My right front has rubbed in the front since the day i lowered the car. Even with the stock wheels and tires. Havent ever figured out why.

Mine too, front passenger tire rubs ever since lowering. Only during full-lock left turns. Seems pretty common.
